I will be attending Playa this year and have tried to get in touch with a couple of people about learning Poi but to now avail. I was wondering if there would be anyone at Playa that would possibly be able to teach me some basics to start off with. Any help would be gratefully appreciated, I could even throw in a reward of some sort. Drink some quality beers, cook a burger, learn some Poi.

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:43 PMThis will be my first PDF...but I am sure you will find a lot of people there that can help you. I will gladly help out where I can. I will even have extra poi if you need.

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:43 PMI would love to help you. As I am kinda new myself I completely understand how fustrating it can be to find someone to break it down. This is me tribes.tribe.net/thephilad...cacba7b561
Come find me and I'll be happy to play and show you what I learned thus far. Also go to www.homeofpoi.com and there are some great videos there. Also get some socks or kids stockings and tennis balls and make some practice poi. They are better for hitting yourself a lot when you're new. XOXO see you there!

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:44 PMI'm sure you won't have a problem finding someone to play with and teach you some stuff. If you have your own practice poi, I'd suggest bringing it. Tube socks and tennis balls baby! That's all you need! -

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:48 PMI do have some practice poi that I am going to bring. Is it better to use tube socks and tennis balls? Right now I have tube socks with bags of rice in them. I have played around a bit and have watched some videos but some face to face time with someone teaching me would defintiely be a great help to me. -

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:05 PMi like rice or beans because it hurts less than tennis balls!
yes there are TONS of people there who do poi. go up and ask anyone if they have the time to share a little knowledge, and if they can't go ask someone else ;o) (I sometimes get asked at bad times, but i'm always willing if i'm not busy/exhausted!!)
i'll be camped near the helicopter with Camp Deviant - look for the inflatable boxing ring and feel free to ask around there for me!

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:20 PMYou're one step ahead. I prefer socks w/ rice bags also (actually, I use stocking knee highs to make my rice bags). I just mentioned the tennis balls because it's quick and easy.
No worries, you'll get lots of face time with spinners at PDF. Carry your poi with you everywhere you go, play with it whenever you can.

Re: Playa and Poi
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 4:21 PMOh man, I remember my first few PDF's when Mattwithpoi would do lessons. those were the days man!
So yeah, I'm down for teaching too. Find me, i'll teach. I like teaching.
i like knee high trouser socks (like the thicker stocking kinds, some don't like the stretch, I do)
I have juggling balls inside mine, but a dry grain of some sort works well... Just remembr you want to double bag incase it gets wet. My friend had rice in hers and they got wet, apparently the bag had split one time she hit herself and she had a lump of puffy soggy rice sludge. -

Re: Playa and Poi
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 3:28 AMYou've got it right. Juggling beanbags are made with bird seed, millet to be exact. This has the optimal density and feel, and will not pulverize into dust like rice will. It also behaves better if it gets wet. The seed is round so they roll around each other to soften impacts and absorb energy.
If you don't want to buy juggling beanbags, fill them with bags of millet. You can get it at your local bird seed store. You can get a whole bag of it for the price of one juggling "ball".

Re: Playa and Poi
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 11:03 AMThis is an awesome post. I am looking for a little more instruction for spinning myself. I found a group in Atlanta while I was out there and learned a little but haven't been able to find a group in Philly since I moved back so am looking forward to picking up some new tricks on the playa this weekend.
I've got a set of glow poi (not recommended for first time use without a cup and a hard head) and a knowledge of the basics so if you see a guy wearing an odd hat somewhere spinning feel free to come up and I'll share a beer and teach you what I know. We're planning on camping at or around the copter!

Re: Playa and Poi
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 1:11 PMI'll looked through that tribe when I first got back and didn't see much going on, but then again it was winterish so it might have slowerd a bit in the colder months.

Re: Playa and Poi
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 2:14 PMthere were indoor spin jams in the winter. i know sometimes there are outdoor ones at a park, haven't made it to those myself, but our conclave practice is held there.
just pop on and introduce yourself, and keep an eye out for gatherings! ;o) i know many people are busy once the regionals start, so they'll be out and about, but if you want to call for an informal gathering in the park, you can do that!
