During the battle between Barrel of Fun and The Pirates I was taking pictures.
I decided to join in the fun and zipped the camera up in it's case and put it down in a safe location so it wouldn't get broken.
Inside one of the pockets was 36 dollars.
During the battle some asshole took the money.
This money was to give to someone who sold us a ticket to be at pdf!
Now cuz of you, asshole, we're out 70 dollars!!
Fuckers like you who steal and disrespect fellow burners do not belong on the Playa!!
I hope you get yours one day!!
I was incredibly shocked and disgusted with this.
You are not a burner you're a thief and an ass.
I just hope no one else was disrespected by you and if they were I hope you were caught and got your ass kicked.
Thanks for being such a fuck face!!

Thank you Playa tribe mates for putting up with my rant I am just very unpleased with this. I know for a fact that it happened during the battle cuz It was the only time I didn't have my eyes on that camera and the money. Please if you know anything let me know so I can raise a bit more hell.
Love you all!!
(except the fuck face)

  • Do you remember where your camera was exactly? I know several people (including me) have video of the event. Maybe someone caught the thief on video?

    - Mad Hatter
    • yeah thanks everyone. as for exactly wear I do know.
On the side of the battle closest to the pavilion (the battle was horizontal to it)
there is a cement square in the direction of the stage.
It has a pipe sticking out of it.
There was one other item near it as well.
I sat it down right next to the pipe on the cement. It was leaning against it.
When we returned and got the camera, camera was there, pocket was open, money gone.
So yes if anyone got that piece it would be awesome to know.
I already checked the youtube videos posted above and the spot is barely in the shot and only for a second.
Please keep me posted so we can kick some fail-burner ass.
      • would also like to add.... if the d bag who stole the money reads this and somehow feels guilty, feel free to PM me and arrange to give it back.
If you have a change of heart and just got caught up in the thrill of the moment I will report the good news without your name and will forgive you.
        We've all been there.
Got crazy and done something stupid.
But If I find out who you are first....
I may not be strong but I know some people who are and I can also be vicious and make your life hell.
        :)

        Love you guys!
        • There was a theif in our camp, people caught her stealing red handed. I told her to stay away and she told the rangers that I threatened her. Regardless no one belongs there who steals from fellow burners.
          • Unsu...

There were others who i heard were caught stealing. No one was ejected from PDF. Kinda gives the wrong message.
            • yeah.... i think something should be done when they are caught.... kicked out or something.... shrug.
              • If you catch someone Stealing from you, telling them to "stay away" is the wrong response. All you are doing is giving that person the opportunity to victimize others. Call a Ranger if you find something stolen from you, then can alert Rangers and then we can a) keep an eye out and b) warn the community to be on alert.

And definitely call a Ranger if you catch the person red-handed. No the Rangers are NOT cops, but they can alert the board members who *DO* have an ejection procedure for things like this. Outright theft like that is a serious matter, not to mention a crime, and speaking as a board Member I can assure we have scant tolerance for people willing to do that sort of thing to another burner.

The other thing I have to emphasize though is radical personal responsibility. Though we could wish otherwise PDF is not immune from attracting scumbags who are willing to victimize their fellow man. Frankly they are rare inside the VVMC, but it happens. Take precautions with valuables and cash (and since you don't need money inside the gates for anything but ice, maybe lock up all but $10 in your car)
      • I went through my many pictures and video of the event and sad to say I did not get anything of that area. Sorry :(

        - Mad Hatter
        • Gypsy Jay had two things stolen during PDF. At the naked spin jam on Friday night at Bangarang, a little LED flashlight went missing. Also, sometime before Sunday night his IPOD was stolen out of his hearse. If anyone knows the location of these items please contact me.

          Calamity Jane
          • Reading all this makes me very sad, first the ticket horseshit, now all this about things getting stolen, so, I want to know, who are all these people now coming to the event and what is happening? ;-(
            • on sunday morning, two of my sparkly hoops were gone from the side of my tent. for some reasons, i was compelled to look in the back field, so i headed that way and stopped by every theme camp. i got to know some really nice people (the silver lining) in the 2 hours that i searched. finally, i saw a girl i knew and told her what i was missing. she said that her fucked up friend had taken them from my tent and thrown them into hers thinking he was doing me a favor by "GETTING THEM OUT OF THE DEW." what the hell is that?

i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we're a trusting community. anyone caught stealing should've been ejected from the event immediately. stealing is the anti-thesis of what PDF is about, and the tolerance of such behavior totally sends the wrong message.
              • our adopted hoop went missing too. It was a hoop someone had left behind last pdf that we asked around if anyone was missing one but no one responded, so it's been coming back to pdf with us in hopes that someone goes "ohh that looks awfully familiar" When we went to pack up Sunday we noticed it was gone. It was shiny and nice compared to my other hoops, and I really hope the original owner wandered past and took it, but now I'm worried it's in he hands of a douchebag :(
              • im not gonna name any names but i heard that story from the other end yesterday and i can personally guarantee that the person actually had the best of intentions and that your hoops were not taken for malicious reasons. alcohol has just never helped this particular individual think clearly and they were never too great at thinking to begin with.
  • All the reported stolen things this PDF is getting rather scary? I know alot of leave many things of value at times in all our camp sites making u s all very vulnerable. How can we prevent it? I guess all we can do is start locking valuables up in cars or something. This is just really sad..
  • it seems like a lot of things went missing, and respect went missing in inappropriate ways. I feel like a lot of people had no idea what was up. I dont know, it seemed like a frat party sometimes- like a lot of people just heard about a big party and tried to be the first to buy tickets, as opposed to being people who understood and were respectful of the values of our community. Maybe there should be a 10 principles pop quiz at the gate..?
    • Hi All,

On Sun Morning, a woman came to our camp to return a satchel of papers that was stolen from the front seat of my pickup truck the night before (parked at the camp) and which she found in her ice chest. Turns out the trucks glove box was also opened and stuff pulled out. The incident was reported and logged with the Rangers.

My guess, someone grabbed the bag, realized there was nothing of value and that they had stolen stuff related to our poly workshop which they (hopefully) wanted to return.

I never thought I would have to lock my camp at PDF. Makes me think twice about bringing a truck full of expensive tools to build shit.

Perhaps this has something to do with multiple people sneaking into the event because they couldn't get tickets, (as if that justifies trespassing.) Once one crime is tolerated, why NOT do more???

      Lucifer
      • Hey all,

I wasn't there this season but just wanted to build on the conversation, I remember last Fall or Spring can't remember, there was plenty of chatter about people sneaking in while I was rangering and if I remember correctly people weren't sure if they were guests of the Vets or not, they blended in with everyone in a matter of seconds. Cant' remember the details that far back LOL but....

I suspect this is a problem and it should be at the top of the list of discussion for Ranger training and at the Participation Station. We should be extra watchful with our belongings this next Fall and we should open a discussion about this, but we should keep our sense of trust so that we can teach the Paying PDF'ers that if they want something most likely they will get it gifted to them anyway.

My two cents. Remember I'll be back with Coffee in Fall :) Miss you all :)

        Sticky Mike
        • Tell the rangers! Stop a person in khaki and tell them, go to participation station or the front gate and ask them to radio a ranger.

Theft can equal ejection! There are consequences beyond karma to bad actions of assholes.

Rangers and others CARE and WANT a SAFE event.

The more reports they have, especially of people caught red handed, the better able they are to deal with the situation.

  • yeah I'm starting to notice an environment change too. Word is getting around about the awesome party that we are and how cheap it is and not understanding the respectful burner element. They don't understand the point of Playa, and I'm seeing these types of people grow in numbers. I understand why we can't screen people, it's just really sad that because the event is growing in popularity that we have to get double the ass holes too.
Sigh.... I'm just disappointed that I can't let my guard down for a second. This is really just too much.
  • ... my wallet is missing, along with my spare pare of glasses (which were broken anyway)... I don't know about you guys, but I noticed a lot of people walking around alone at the camps at all strange times of the night when most people were sleeping or when everyone was at the burn. I tried not to go back to my tent to often, becuase I kind of felt like "someone" out there was stalking me simply because their ego got to fucking big.
    • And its not just the stealing making things feel different. The principle of Radical inclusion is being tarnished. On 2 seperate occasions passing by one specific camp there was a sense of judgement, and hatred that I had never sensed at PDF ever before in the 4 I have attended. It was so strong that I made it a point to stay away from that camp th eremainder of the event. Its sad the way the principles appear to be being eroded or simply ignored.
      • I think the main thing is PDF needs is to stop being referred to as this great party, IMO that is where a good portion of this comes from and the newbies are not aware or are not made aware of the ten principles and how the community values work....I myself have pre-burn meetings for newbies and veterans alike to go over the principles, what is a burn, etc., etc. way before the event even happens and we try extremely hard for people to understand the burn community for what it is, we can only go forward from this point and if in the future someone steals, makes a judgement, etc. tell a ranger and it can be logged in the log book and remind folks of the ten commandments and the fact that PDF is so much more than just a party or this super cool thing to go to... I myself did not feel compelled to just walk into any camp as I have at previous PDF's, there was a definite feeling of exclusivity at this past event but we can only move forward as a community to remedy the situation so now we need solutions and cures...so brainstorm all of us on what we, as a community can do!
        • at a time. Everybody knows therefore at least HALF of all the attendees email adresses, etc.
I heard of other people like Kamal haqving a wallet stolen from aArthow Village DJ table. It doesn't mean somebody was a 'stranger' from out of the community who took it, but the THEFT problem is a DIFFERENT problem than the GETTING TOO BIG and having too many PARTY CRASHERS Problem. 2 different things. Move thread on to new discussion:
          ???
      • Julia,

I'm sorry to hear about that experience. Is there a way you can elaborate on what happened, so that the entire community can better understand and thus address these issues?
        • I have been trying to decide the best way to approach it or explain it but am Not really sure yet how. It was mainly a verbal expression of opinmions and attitudes which were very negative, but who am i to tell someone what the should think, feel or express. It was also done in one of those behind the back sneaky methods that send you a message without being directly confronted. (If you ever had it happen to you I am sure this makes sense). It was strong enough however that I felt very uncomfortabvle for myself and others, that I even expressed when going on Ranger Duty to my fellow rangers that if anything came up around that camp That it would be better if they looked into and I would stay back away because i was made to feel that my presence would have made any potential situation worse.

I wish I could explain more and maybe in time I will or through other channels than a public chat sight. It really through me off guard coming at an event like PDF like it did.
      • Mmmmmm yes. I believe I know who you are speaking of. I felt a great deal of it to from one specific camp. I barely walked by and sensed it. They stayed to themselves almost the entirety of pdf as well and made no effort to fix the vibe they were putting off. I made an effort to smile and see if there would be a warm opening to move in and found nothing but ice even in that hot weather. Sigh... I always counted on PDF to be that one place to not have any pf that drama.
  • Maybe we can set out a busted digital camera (so it doesn't matter if it's stolen) out in the open and rig up some of those motion activated game cameras near the "bait." Put the set up at a theme camp that tends to go to sleep early so legit camp members are not wandering around triggering the camera.

It really sucks for me to hear about thefts at PDF, especially since I never really considered it a problem. I like the idea of being able to just throw my bag down and have fun to come back to it 25 minutes later and not worry about missing my digital camera or whatever. I'd hate to have to change my mind.

That said I'm still not convinced it's a huge problem - many "thefts" are probably actually "losses," but in this thread with everything thinking about theft, it makes sense that it seems more like a theft now, if that makes sense.

As for hoops going missing and such - I recommend writing on the hoop or other object, "please return to XXX theme camp." We all know there is plenty of inebriation at PDF and it's possible someone may wake up in the morning and say, "Aww crap, where did this nice hoop come from?" Even if you do not belong with a theme camp, I'm sure many of the established camps wouldn't mind hanging on to something in case the owner wanders by - at least you'll have a place to go looking for it.

Jen, I'm sorry to hear about your money.
    • I also agree with the losses thing and there is a difference.
I fully believe in the idea that if it is not in your tent, especially a hoop or something similar, then you're making it free game.
Those who are losing things from inside the tent is incredibly wrong. I also believe that whoever took the money was wrong because that is never something that one should just pick up and take without asking and it was not out in the open. It was hidden away.
Anyway, so I don't think we have as huge of a theft problem as we think, but any theft is a problem and needs to be dealt with.
    • Video FOOTAGE...subpoena the DEA

      Sat, May 30, 2009 - 8:58 PM
I'm sure the DEA cameras caught the thief on tape. Can we get a subpoena to see thier footage? Also, I left 600 double-stacks of E in a cooler by the wood pile. I think it sux somebody took it and poured it into the Vets well. On the other hand, they are selling bottled water in addition to ice at the next event. $20 a bottle, and well worth it.

      [yes i'm joking...WTF!]
  • Thank you Calamity for getting this before I did, but to correct the flash light, it is a little LED flashlight that can be clipped. It is grey. and not to mention the IPOD is new. I got it in December of last year. Not to mention you had to reach into my hearse window and grab it. You are just lucky I did not catch you cause your arm might have been broken. That takes guts to do something like that.

This was my first burn, not only did I have things stolen, but my faith in humanity also. I was told how great PDF is, well after reading the posts and having my stuff stolen, makes me wonder how great PDF really is
    • Dude take it easy... Your faith in humanity ? WTF!
Was your car even inside the gate when this happened?
      • This is why we always keep a man or two back at camp to watch our stuff. Not that we don't trust people, but just to make sure everything is there the next day. This includes during the burns, which at BM, is the highest time for theft as I understand it. I do always tend to be free with where I drop my bag during the event, perhaps next tie I'll think twice and lock it all up.

In my experience with large events over time, these things wax and wane. There were many super-pure events that we've thrown, and then there were some where other elements showed up which we didn't expect. The way we dealt with it is exactly how we're dealing with it here, by raising consciousness, setting intentionality and moving forward with a positive perspective while on the lookout with preparedness to address a negative situation shall one arise. I'm pretty sure that this is how the BMORG would address it as well- greater ranger and public awareness and a plan to deal with it in the future if need be.

Let's remember that this is the real world and crappy effed up stuff happens even when we don't expect it to, unfortunately. Let's raise awareness and be proactive for the future. When we all come together in support of a cause, and all keep an eye out for each other, things improve.
    • Gypsy,

If your IPod got stolen Sat night it was also when the vinyl case was stolen from the seat of my open window truck. We were parked real close to each other so it probably was the same thief.

Also, I agree with Miss Fidget that it is important to report this stuff to the Rangers so if a pattern appears in the Ranger Log, they can see it in overview. Likewise, reporting stuff may help resolve other incidents. For example, if the person who put the hoops in their tent to save them from the dew also had the IPOD, we would definitively have our thief and no amount of bullshit would talk them out of it.

      L
      • From my experience living in Chicago and my criminal law days, I learned that most all small property theft in my experience is drug-related, as in junkies looking for small, easily fencable items. Having gotten many things ripped off from my cars over the years in the default world I've noticed a pattern to this kind of theft. Typically, the perp will hit a dozen or so close by targets all at once taking anything he can from "soft" targets like unlocked cars. In fact, given what I'm hearing from everybody here, I'd lay money all the thefts may have been the work of a single individual.

The problem is, out of 1000 people, one person can be very hard to identify, that's why a certain level of vigilance on the part of all participants is called for. If you see someone who doesn't seem to belong where he is lurking, if he/she makes your spider sense, tingle them by all means DO something about it. I don't recommend screaming "stop thief!"; but walking over to him, (with a few friends if they make you uncomfortable ) with a big smile, engaging them in conversation etc. If they bolt off, or seem "wrong" to you somehow; then get the word out, alert a ranger, whatever. You don't need proof that will stand up in a court of law just to pass on a suspicion or a hunch. Speaking as a ranger, I'd much rather get a few wrong hunches than let a real danger to the community slip by unnoticed.
    • PDF is a really great place and the only theft that goes on at should be in a playful, completely open, and brazen way (ex. our pirate antics) I was really happy to know that the camps we did play pirate games with understood that they were only pirate games and we would never pirate anything of value, much less keep it.

I myself bring a safe with me and I keep my cell phone and wallet inside it, the safe itself was also locked in the car. I knew I wouldn't need the cell phone or the money ( because if you really need either of those on you constantly, you aren't having a good time at a burn) plus they weigh down me briches, and I never wear underwear on the playa except for the underwear pillow fight.

My advice, lock it up especially if you will only need it for supplies. If you have no method for doing such a thing, bring me a bottle of rum and get friendly, I'm always there from Thursday till Monday and always happy to help out my burner family

I'm in agreement with many of you though about the newbie vibes, it was something I had cocern over when I heard how many friends couldn't get tix. And I was hoping to meet a whole bunch of new burners (virgin or otherwise) with a side less innocent goal of meeting new burner chickies. But I must say the stock this year was slightly lacking in my opinion.

Also, I know I'm not the only one that feels this way but I'll probably be the first to say it. The vets kids can get out of control, two seperate instances they harassed female members of my crew,

Once was in the backlot, I was wandering and noticed a golf cart with two of the vets kids trying very unsuccessfully to get my friend Erin to come back to their trailer, at this point I walked over and put my arm around Erin and walked with her at which point they drove away, she said they wouldn't leave her alone till I came over.
The second intance was one of the vets kids trying to get my friend ellen to come in the tent he was having out in, a tent that belonged to my friend Jonah.
I don't mean to bitch and all the actual vets I've met have been awesome, but sooner I'd later their kids are gonna do something stupid around someone with a much shorter temper then myself and it won't be pretty
  • I had a similar problem. I was going over to my tent where I saw 2 people bent down looking at my things (clothing). Long story short both of them were very persistent in wanting to "have" my things. I explained there were a couple camps dedicated to clothing exchanges and gifting and they still felt the need to tell me "well we want your stuff". I felt extremely ganged up on, so I just gave them a few things to get them away from me. I cannot believe people would do this to anyone. It almost made me feel bad because I didn't want to seem selfish like "oh these are MY things and you can't have them", but when someone demands I give them something I felt violated. Where have all the burners gone!
    • Christa,

Being shaken down by thieves in your own camp is outrageous & should not have been tolerated.

Why didn't you get a ranger & hopefully have them kicked the fuck out or, minimally get your stuff back & have them watched so they don't hurt others??? You would have been doing the entire community a favor by identifying people acting in such an ignorant & non burneresque way.

As a 4 PDF Ranger myself, I would like to say it would not have put me out to help you resolve that complaint and I would have appreciated the opportunity to try to nip more community problems with these people in the bud.

The community members who value this alternative reality need to own & protect it.

      L
      • I was completely and utterly taken by surprise. I do regret not speaking up, but to be honest it didn't even come to mind to tell someone, like a ranger. I think I was just overtaken by the absolute lack for human space. I think mostly, because I didn't want to add to the already overpowering drama that was already going on. That's my home, I should have protected it for myself and all others, but I didn't want to start anything I guess. I can't believe these people ( the 2 that approached me) have me apologizing for someone bullying me at home. I just feel bad because they might have done it to someone else.
  • My own opinion on the matter is that the ticket price should definitely be increased. I think that $35.00 just makes it too easy for a non PDFer to come along and think wow, what a great price for a party. Free alcohol, free food, free entertainment, free camping, and all I have to do for it is act like an idiot. I believe that if we want to attract radical thinking artists, creative individuals and much more honesty, then that ticket price needs to be above the amount that some broke ass thief can pay and not too much above what a serious PDFer is willing to pay. If a PDFer is unable to afford the cost then there should be an abundance of hardship tickets available to the serious individuals who want to take the time to apply for them. Some drugged out moron who doesn't get it is not going to take the time to apply for one. I, myself, am more than willing to make the sacrifice of paying extra for a ticket in order to clean up the bullshit that has been noticeably increasing over the last few burns.
I also have a strong opinion on the amount of children there. There are many parents that I can say that I respect for the way that they watch over their children, but then there are many minors that I watched roaming through the red light district, during the daytime and late at night very much unattended. I just wouldn't bring my child to this event, I just don't get how it is child friendly at all. My own personal opinion is that the child ticket price should be increased, if not double to that of an adults. I'd hate to tell someone that you should leave your children at home, but at the same time, what do we do and how do we handle it when one sick ass perv gets drugged up or drunk enough to take advantage of one of those children.
I think the theft is a wake up call. I believe that now comes the time to make a decision as to what needs to be done to curb other things that are slowly getting out of control. I guess it is a matter of which direction PDFers would like to see their beloved PDF flow in. I believe that the options are to make it more expensive and attract more artists and free thinkers and actual burners or just let it go to the dealers.

    ~Chelas
    • I think the easier solution to this might be a sponsorship program... Just a thought. Then again I suppopse it kind of defeats the idea of radical inclusion if we shut out a percentage of the population based on what they might or might not do... ideas?

About children at the event. Responsibility encompasses taking care of little ones. It's pretty clear that Playa isn't exactly 'kid-friendly' and I think it's up to the parents to make sure that their children don't see anything they don't want them to see... Then again, if I had kids, I doubt they'd be coming to playa with me...

How would I get any drinking done?
      • well i do know a similar family event in our area is basically invite only. you have to know someone who has gone there and this person has to testify to their "coolness".

This event usually has about 700+ people and there really isnt an issue of theft. once youve attended the event your name is on a list that automatically gets an invite for next time.

Basically this allows for a more stable growth rate without having all the riff raff.

it does kind of go against radical self inclusion. but hey, if it will provide a better experience for everyone that deserves to be there it would almost be worth it.
    • Excluding people based on money is a form of exclusion not radical inclusion, nd frankly if the person is there to use PDF as a "for profit" experience by stealing a few hundred dollars worth of stuff how high are we going to have to set the ticket prices where that no longer becomes attractive to them (hint BM with $200 min ticket and 150 miles from civilization has a much larger theft/crime problem than we do, even per capita)

As for kids, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you don't have any. When I didn't, I felt the same way you did; shocked people would even consider bringing their kids. As a proud PDF parent of a child who's on their 10th burn, I obviously feel very differently now, partially because of all the people who have made a point of stopping me and thanking me for bringing my kid. Partially because he's a kick ass participant who pulls a lot of volunteer shifts and partly because they appreciate the trust we have in them by bringing him. Once again, radical inclusion means what it says. In fact one of the thing Burning Man LLC insists on, if you want to be an "official" regional burn is that there are no age minimums for attendance. SunBurn in FLA, for instance chose not to be an "official regional" precisely because they wanted to keep their 21+ only policy
      • I have three children. PDF is my chance to act like a kid and do things that I don't want them to see me do. I have high respect for many of the parents that I know who bring their children to PDF and keep such a close eye on them that they are not witnesses to the trampoline blow-jobs and the red light district beatings and other stuff that I find wonderfully blessed to be a part of. However, when I see twelve year olds doing drugs I really have to step back and ask myself if this is good for kids and what can we do to prevent neglectful parents from bringing along their kids for no other reason than the fact that they could not come up with a babysitter. I am in no way suggesting that people should not bring their children to such a magical event if it is an environment that they have grown up in and have responsible parents that are capable of caring for them. Also, It's my own opinion and nobody has to agree with it.
I would feel devastated if a child were raped or attacked or harmed at any of the events that I attend, and responsible if I had sat back and never expressed any of my thoughts on this matter. If ticket prices were raised in regards to children than it would discourage people from bringing a child for the lack of a sitter. If the only thing that people think of is "poor me, I don't want to pay more than 35 dollars" than shame on you. Raising ticket prices is definitely not the whole answer to the problem, but it's a start and will weed out some of the lesser riffraff.
I love PDF and love every moment of my time there, however, there are these few occasions where I witnessed the most disturbing things and have to question where I need to draw the line. Where do you draw the line between kids and sex and drugs? There has to be one somewhere. Even at PDF. That is what I had hoped the red light district would have helped to do, just draw a simple line, but I saw that it didn't work. And doped up twelve year olds wasn't any cuter than last years doped up dogs. When that twelve year old goes back to school and says, wow I spent the weekend doped up with my parents at PDF will we have swat cars and helicopters next PDF?
        • Any parent who allows a 12 year old to do drugs is going to let them do it at home. I've been bringing Eba to PDF for 7 years... She pulls more volunteer shifts than most of the adults at PDF! She is involved in more participation than most adults at PDF! I will never be for the exclusion of children... Even if there was one doing drugs. They are the future of these burns and we need them there. I am so proud of who my daughter is and what she stands for... She is a true burner and I know from raising her in this envirnonment that she would never do something to compromise to principals of the event.

BTW... thanks for painting her leg,,, she loved it! You are truly gifted!

          Chili~
    • My 2 cents are severial topics brought up in this thread so far..

      1. I agree that the ticket price should be raised to say maybe $50 or $60 per adult. Most camp sites that I go to charge as much as $38.00 PER DAY to stay there. You can trim back on some of the riff-raff by raising the ticket price.

      2. Wearing wristbands should be manditory constantly. I saw quite a few people that didn't have them on ever. "Sneaking in" is unacceptable and is just like stealing or lying, both of which I personally loath.

      3. Children are awesome people and should always be welcome to come. Period.

      4. The only possesion I ever kept a close eye on was my drum. I would turn from a peace-loving-hippy-person into psycho-killer in a N.Y. minute if I ever caught someone trying to take it! Thus I kept it out of sight in my tent for most of the gathering. I never had any problems with anyone.

AND then finally,.. as tough and negative as this thread may seem, let me just say that:
I had a really wonderful time at this PDF. Everyone that I met or that took the time to talk to me was really wonderful.
I came alone, but made sure to bring lots of extra food and drinks to share with my neighbors. Even though I STILL feel like a "newbie" at these events..I have come to feel respect and love for what each of you bring to PDF.
      Thank you so very much!

      Sincerely,
      Lucian
  • No matter what or where you go, no matter how much you raise ticket prices there will still be problems. You get a bunch of people together something is bound to happen. I agree with Pirate Tim, the vets kids were a bit of a problem. This PDF seemed VERY different from all the other ones and I have a feeling that last fall may have been the last true PDF. I REALLY hope that I'm wrong I only think about PDF about 54 times a day...
    • this is all very troubling. I personally had a wonderful PDF, my best yet and i was my 4th burn. I think it may be a little pre mature to consider it to not be a true PDF, or the the spirit is somehow dead. It's important to remember the hundreds of computers, Ipods, instruments, and other valuables that stayed unsupervised almost all weekend and were fine.

I don't think we should view this as the end of our community. I would like to grow it, I wish there was a way we could have 2000 people, or 5000, however many we can enjoy the event with, we should strive to. IN that growth however, some problems will pop up, and we just need ot learn how to deal with them so we can include all the great new burners. I camped with something like 10 virgins this year. They are all clearly true burner's at heart and are all already helping to plan my camp's next theme.

If pressed to come up with a solution, i would say we should just watch out for our things, and each other. I personally dont leave my car unlocked outside of my house in broad day light, even if I'm just running in for a minute. I don't live in a bad neighborhood, but it is the way of the world. While on the Playa, as far as my most valuable possessions (ipod, wallet. phone etc.) go, they were in my back pack, which was either in my tent, in a safe place at my theme camp, or on my back. Aside from that, let's keep an eye on each other... not in a suspicious way, but in the way that we all have each other's back
i feel that is a better course than talking about ways to filter who can come to this event in any way. that is a dark path to go down and THAT, more than the occasional bad apple, or lame incident poses a danger to the spirit of PDF.

As far as what I have been reading about unwanted advances by vet's kids, I think that is something that should respectfully brought to the vet's attention. From what I understand, they have always respected the no means no rule when it comes to the people who use their land, and they are all good people who I'm sure would expect the same of their children.
That topic in general is a serious one, but it can be handled if we again, all just watch each other's backs and remember we are all brothers, sisters, and whatever the hell furries are ;)

BTW, gypsy.. please don't lose your faith, I'm truly sorry your first PDF was tainted, but you contributed so much, and I hope you come back. My first "that rocks" moment of this PDF was standing in line and seeing you drive up in that hearse.

love you all, thanks for the best burn of my life so far.
      KEEEEEEEEE!

    • Unsu...

There were thefts last fall during the burn too.
The only true PDF is the one you're in.

      On another note
I have seen some flaming of late when ever someone makes a suggestion that would protect other community members. Some of us are against rules period. Even Anarchy has rules folks. Radical self expression without consideration of the community is antithetic to BM. Sadly, I have seen this "if you dont like it dont come" attitude prevail at BM. If PDF becomes a yahoo drugs and titties event, it will be on all of us for letting it happen.I found PDF unique in that the Pony People actually cared for each other. I still feel that way.
I love my PDF family and I am committed to watching out for them be they veteran burners or newbies.

      Just sayin

      Ludent
  • this is all so fucked up.

I had $20 and a handful of cartridges taken out of my tent, but I didn't realize till just before leaving by counting my money again.

This is such a wonderful place and I love the people who make it what it is, and its terrible that a few assholes have to make us all paranoid.
  • YES!!!
I DO WANT TO EMPHASIZE AS WELL.
THIS WAS MY BEST PDF YET!!
    DESPITE LOOSING THE MONEY.

PDF has been the greatest discovery in the world to me and even if someone had sotlen everything I owned, I would be back again.
I've learned lesson and whoever is stealing things has issues, but I fully agree with Mel not to let it ruin what we have.
I would give up many things and do to be at the playa and I can handle a little more.
Please do not take the thefts as a negative feel towards the playa.
Be angry with those who stole and use it as a lesson.
We must protect our things as well as each others things.

I also agree about possibly raising prices. I am a poor college kid who can barely afford food sometimes
and yet for the playa I'd be willing to save and spend more for a ticket because I love the community so much.
I def believe it will help sort out those who are not true to the playa.
    Not stop it but help.

ANYWAY, cheer up folks. Don't let this ruin your good memories. I'm not.
The point of this forum was mainly to shout out and hopefully put guilt into the thefts heart.
Not make anyone love the playa less.
Please lets all put on some smiles, find peace, forgiveness, and remember the good.
I've already forgiven and moved on.
It's healthy and will protect our loving PDF.

    LOVE THE PONY!!!
  • Stunt Man,
Yes it was in the camp area. I had an onsite parking pass. What I meant about humanity is it is kinda sad that you goto an event like PDF and you can't even trust others. I know their is always going to be an ass, but this is the place to get away from them. I had the passenger window down cause 10 cans of fuel in a locked up car, and very hot weather bad combination.

I know next time if their iwll be one, don't take the hearse, and bring less. Kinda sad if you ask me. but oh well,
    • also The reason I did not report it to the rangers is cause this was my first burn, and the impresion I got fromt he rangers is they didn't care, and was just volunteering, hell one ranger was drinking while on duty Friday night. So I would like to know how I am going to trust the rangers. I found out about my IPOD Sunday night and something small like an IPOD can be easly hidden in your pocket, So I have alot to think about.
      • Ranger Dinah here. i am speaking for myself only with the following opinion: the rangers participate in the event just like everyone else, and in fact are encouraged to do so, so that they are out and about and available. many of us enjoy a beverage or two while on our 6 hour shifts, while always obeying the guidelines that say we must keep our wits about us - we know our limits. we are "not your mom" and "not the police", but we ARE a caring co-participant in our event and i hope you will feel differently from now on about approaching any one of us.
if you come back to pdf - and i hope you will - maybe think about attending ranger training on friday evening? if you decide not to volunteer at that time, it could help you understand our role more. believe me, we do care!
        • i really don't think you should blame the rangers. I know one in particular who the past 3 burns has used their real world training to provide primary to care to serious injuries. they do their job for free, and shouldn't be expected to watch over everything and act like on duty cops/firemen/paramedics, although all the rangers i know usually do.
Trust your fellow burners, but keep a watchful eye out for that 1% of people who are just there for selfish hedonism and self indulgent debauchery. they can ruin the burn if people wrongly mischaracterize them as an average burner.
          • This is a cross post reply to "I was a Virgin" thread

That's a shame that your first experience was a negative one. Keep in mind, that true Burners are generally some of the most trustworthy, talented and beautiful people you will ever have the pleasure of meeting in this short lifetime. I have been to Black Rock for ten years and have attended dozens of regionals and decoms. In stark contrast I worked in the mainstream entertainment industry for a decade as well. I have seen everything there is to see. There really is no comparison of burning man to say Bonnaroo, where everyone is selling something and everyone throws trash on the ground and assaults and violence are common.

The fact that there are people who come to an event like PDF and steal deeply saddens me. But in reality it is only their frustrated reaction of non acceptence. It sounds strange but think about it. Most people have never been exposed to a community such as ours. an average joe who is used to boozing and violence walks into an event like ours and gives off such a strong negative vibe that they are pretty much cold shouldered by all of us. Eventually they react by taking things that don't belong to them, groping the girls and so on. But the good thing is, they are unlikely to come back. They never understood what we are about and are not willing to try. The Playa is a natural filter. There will always be a very small percentage of people to show up to BM and regionals that really don't belong. They wont come back but they will be replaced by someone else. There is really no way of truly filtering out this element without becoming a radically exclusive event. Because on the other hand, there is always a "square" that will show up to our events and have their mind blown wide open. We have to remain an open experiment in order to spread the true beauty of our community throughout the larger world.

In Philadelphia we host the Decom as well as several other large events throughout the year. In the beginning we pretty much let everyone into the events. By the third or fourth event however, we noticed a shift in the crowd we were attracting. It was becoming younger, more inebriated and there seemed to be many individuals selling things. We were forced to go invitation only and over 21 only. This pretty much solved the problem for us. How can we remain truly inclusive and be invitation only? Well all someone has to do to receive an invitation is pay attention on Tribe or through our other networks and request one. This process did a simple thing for us, it clarified the quality of our event attendees and helped to virtually eliminate that rogue random element. PDF does the same thing through their ticketing process. I think it's perfect that their tickets sell out and that people have to work a little bit to get a ticket. Imagine if tickets were available for sale at the gate? Tons of randoms and locals would be showing up. This does happen from time to time, but the majority of people at PDF are real, dedicated burners. And that is what makes the event the beautiful thing that it is.

I think the lesson we can learn from this is twofold. One we should all keep a better eye on our shit and our camp. And two if we ever-ever catch anybody stealing anything, they should immediately be ejected from the event and identified and banned from all further events. (i personally might give them a swift efficient beating) ;o)

Anyway, I hope that you can feel that the experiences and friends that you gained at PDF are way more valuable than some mere physical possession such as an i-pod which can be replaced. The memories that you gained last weekend will remain with you forever. Maybe whoever is listening to your ipod now needed that music in their life so deeply and that listening to your music will change who they are.

I too had my favorite hat disappear. But you know what? I hope whoever is wearing it now enjoys it and gets a little strut in their step from the energy it gives them. I know it did some great things for me. If only that hat could talk.

Much Love to you...see you on the playa.....
      • The reason you thought he "didn't care" is probably because you have a misapprehension of what the Rangers are and do. We see "uniforms" (though as rangers we call them "costumes"-because semantics are important) and we are trained to think "authority figure". The PDF rangers are no such thing. What we are is
        a) a group of volunteer mediators: got a problem with someone or something? Can't work it out yourself? Then you can grab a ranger to try to mediate the problem with you and the other party. The key here is mediate: which means we aren't going to offer any solutions but hlp the aggrieved parties talk it out and try to reach their own compromise

        b) "Sober friend": You know that one guy you like to have at a party who doesn't get drunk/altered; and tries to keep an eye on things so nobody does anything too stupid? Rangers are that guy for 4-6 hours at a time

        c) Caring participants with a great Com system: like everyone else at PDF we are empowered participants who seek to look out for our community, and are willing to be proactive about it. Unlike everyone else at PDF we have a very good radio network that lets us summon things like Medical help or a member of the PDF board very quickly when needed.

(And unlike the Rangers, the PDF Board idoes have some "enforcement" powers, like, (after following their own internal procedure) ejecting a participant from the event of even banning them from future events. It is NOT something that's done lightly, but it IS done)

So in your case, what the ranger could do is basically tell the other rangers to keep their eyes out, and maybe warn the theme camps that a theft had occurred. So I don't think it was so much that they didn't care as that there was very little, after the fact, that they could do for you
  • It was interesting for me to find this thread today. Some of my friends and I felt that this burn was 'different' somehow and I was wondering if others felt the same. I realize that every burn is 'different' in one way or another and that they all bring new joys and challenges. That is part of the beauty of PDF. However, I had several conversations during the weekend, with both old and new friends that indicated concern for the direction the burn was taking. It did, to me, seem to be more of a 'rave' or 'party' burn than in the past. That is not to say that there were not many exceptions to that observation, nor that I did not partake of Teh Booze. ;-)
I'm not interested in creating online drama so I will not name people or times or places, but I had at least one experience with a stranger that reflected a very real lack of understanding of the Burner ethos. It was disappointing, hurtful and surprising. A friend that was with me at the time stated that I looked, 'taken aback' and indeed, I was. In fact, I felt as though perhaps I didn't 'fit in' at PDF any longer. I take responsibility for my side of that experience. I don't blame anyone else for my own insecurity, however, the other individual was obviously responsible for their rude and unwelcoming behavior.
When I shared my experience with a long time burner friend, they suggested that this was a challenge. I could leave PDF and my process of becoming a consistent part of the burner community or I could abandon the event to those that would treat others as they had treated me. They made an excellent point.
WE make this event. WE make it what it is. WE make it what it will be and WE are responsible for its future. Speak up if you're being treated poorly and please, KEEP COMING!!!!
As an aside...while this was a hard burn for me, I had a wonderful time, and in actuality I came away from it in a state of greater emotional wholeness. Thank you to all that supported me and laughed with me. You know who you are!
Love to all and see you in the fall! ;-D
    • I understand wanting to keep out thieves and the like, but raising ticket prices will not accomplish that.

Consider raising ticket prices $10. For 1,000 tickets, that increases the cost a total of $10,000. Was there $10,000 worth of stuff stolen? And if tickets were more expensive, would NONE of that stuff have been stolen?

Lucian suggested raising the prices up to $50-60 which is just worse.

Someone else made the comment that a lot of people come to PDF and realize it's not for them, especially if they are a thieving wastoid. For someone with that sort of blackness in their heart, I can't imagine they feel comfortable in such a welcoming and community atmosphere. So even jacking prices will not keep the "bad" first timers from coming. We just have to hope they don't come back.

Really, I think the best asshole filter we have is just that you have to prepare yourself for an entire weekend of living outdoors, food, etc. and that work keeps out some of the lazier types.

I did not witness anything like Julia mentioned, but I will say that in my experience, the only people who damaged the energy of the event were guests of the Vets, who often acted more like they were at a bachelor party and who treated our female participants as if they were getting paid $200/hour to entertain at said bachelor party. I am talking about the Vets' guests, not the Vets themselves.
      • I was just pitching an idea, Snail. I really don't know if it'd make a diff or not.

Personally I think this whole thing is being blown slightly out of perportion. I'm willing to bet that the upcoming Fall PDF will be just fine. The Spring and Fall PDF's seem to have two very different flavors any way, or so I've noticed.
        So, we shall see!

        Peace,
        Lucian
        • PDF has been steadily growing. This burn was the biggest yet. The more people we have, the more anonymity there is and the easier it is for people to take advantage of the openness and trusting nature of the community and the event.

Everyone being vigilant and proactive is the best way to deal with issues like this without severely compromising the ideals that make PDF what is. If something is taken from you, report it. If someone gives you any kind of trouble get a ranger. If the rangers didn't care, they wouldn't be spending six hours or more volunteering as a ranger. Rangers are often the most dedicated and self-sacrificing people at the event.

There are many hurdles to dealing with something like theft or intimidation. But the biggest one is the victims not reporting it and not protecting themselves. If someone is harassing you and you are scared, start yelling for help and rangers. I can guarantee you will have a flock of people rushing to your aid. Those who prey upon the rest of us can not be dealt with if we do not know who they are. The predators are also going to keep at it as long as they think they can get away with it. But if it becomes clear and well known that their behavior will not be tolerated and will have consequences, then they will be less likely to try. Securing your valuables is also a big part of it. Most petty crime is a matter of opportunity. The easier it is for someone to steal something and get away with it, the more likely it is going to happen. PDF takes place in the real world. There is no possible way to make the event 100% safe.

As far as the new burners, it usually takes some time for people to "get it." Many veteran burners were yahoos at least once. A burn is not just a place to celebrate the community and have fun, it is also a place to acculturate new members. This can be helped along by everyone setting a good example. On Thursday this past burn I was walking a few feet between two guys. One of them flicked his cigarette but on the ground and the guy walking with him asked him to please pick it up. Not only is that awesome, but the mooper immediately picked it up and then thanked the other guy for helping him get in the habit of not mooping. That kind of self-policing and example setting is what we need more then anything. The solution should never be, "someone should do something about this." It should always be, "what are we going to do about this?"

Lastly, the "vets' kids." There were some issues this past burn, and we have had issues in the past. Most of the people that have been referred to here as vets' kids were probably not. There were a number of people caught sneaking in that were kicked out by both the Vets and PDF staff and were not related to the Vets. Some of these people were assisted in sneaking in by veteran burners.

There were also guests of the vets that were kicked out by Vets and PDF staff. Because Memorial Day is obviously a big deal for the Vets, they allow some of their friends and family to come hang out with them. However, if they are not a club member they were required to be escorted by the club member sponsoring them and at least several otherwise legitimate guests of the vets were temporarily evicted because their sponsor was not with them. With the trespassing issue, again self policing comes in. How many people saw someone without a wristband and confronted them or reported it? It is up to all of us to protect the event and the community.

As Ludent and others pointed out, any failure of PDF is the failure of all of us. If PDF becomes nothing more than a party filled with intoxicated and selfish people, it is because all of us allowed it to. We are all in it together and we are all responsible for ourselves and each other. If we don't all do our part, then we will certainly fail. And if we decide to 'fix' our problems by excluding others, setting criteria for membership in the community or expecting someone else to solve the problem for us then we have failed. At that point it might as well just be another big party and nothing else.
      • I guess I should add ...
I had a small issue with the Vet's guests as well.
Nothing too serious, but just enough to make me uncomfortable.
I shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable at PDF.
But having a group of young 'non-civilian' bikers (some wearing 'colors') in my dome
was not what I was expecting to have to deal with.
They were fine for the most part, but resisted my attempts to engage them
in a friendly manner, and at one point, with a single word, let me know
that I should mind my own business if I knew what was good for me.
I've spent enough time around non-civilian motorcycle clubs to understand
these guys are not to be taken lightly.
Maybe if I was more naive, it wouldn't have even show up on my radar.
(I think I was the only person in the dome who realized or even caught the vibe)
        Just figured I'd share.
        --Maat
        • you know... i do have to say that ive only gotten a good vibe from maybe only one of the younger vet's.

usually their too busy riding around trying to look tough. it makes me laugh inside.

why do people feel the need to exude such burgeoning male machismo at such a loving and caring event?
          • Really? The camaraderie with some of the vets is a big part of what has made my two PDF experiences warm fuzzy the-real-world-has-room-for-us happy for me. And it's not just that they appreciate the slip-n-slide. A lot of the guys (and gals) puttering about on their golf carts will wave happily or even stop and say hello when folks acknowledge them; they're checking out the event and going on walkabout as much as we with our lack of motorized transport are. They don't have to run the hayride, and definitely not the occasional trash 'truck', but they do, and I've never seen anyone grumpy about it. I'm sure some of them are just keeping an eye on us, yes. But I get the feeling that a lot of the vets and their families who hang around for the whole weekend do so because they enjoy the entertainment.
            • I love the vets. They add such an awesome element to this burn that isn't at other burns and they are so awesome for letting us use their land. I love the trailer rides around. And the fact that halfway walking to the dumpster with my trash a vet with a forklift offers to carry it the rest of the way. I love that in the middle of the large scale Bang-A-Zang battle they hit me with water balloons slingshot from their porch. I also loved their response to our sunday morning mimosa's. All the biker guys turned them down at first, but slowly every single one of them came around, lol. They need us as much as we need them and it's part of what makes PDF so great.
            • For the most part, I like the vets, but I have been touched inappropriately by one (and very quickly removed myself from the situation, two people can not hoop together simply by throwing the hoop and grinding your crotch against me thanks.) and this last burn my female friends were propositioned/harassed by some drunk vets hanging out by the stocks near pound on the playa.

Last fall, i think it was, i was riding around on the tractor bed, driven by a very awesome vet might I add, and I was chatting with another guy who was visiting his friend (one of the vets) he told me how they invite their friends and family over to visit them and see the "carnival and freaks" that pop up in their front yard. I love the vets that participate or leave us alone, I dislike the ones that become voyeurs or harassers.
  • ya'll want some cheese with your whine?

Seriously guys, one thing that has always erked me about the Playa... is you all assume that as soon as people walk through the gates, that they will all of a sudden go through some kind of spiritual upheaval. Come on guys, grow up. There are a lot of shitty people out in the world, get used to it. Don't leave your tent flaps unzippered, don't leave your bags outside of your tent, don't leave your car unlocked or your windows down, and don't wear anything that you wouldn't want to see on the internet. This was only my second PDF, and I had such a great weekend.
  • OK I guess I came across wrong. I know the rangers are not my MOMMY. I know that they are their to have fun. I know it was my fault that I left he window down, but let me think here, Oh that is why I did not goto the Ranger, cause an IPOD is small and can fit in your pocket. It was late Sunday night/early Monday morning when I found out. All I know is it became missing from Friday. night to when I found out about it Sunday night. I was dealing with alot of shit by this point and the IPOD thing was just the icning on the cake.

Now as for being a first time burner "VIRGIN" I was told oh how wonderful PDF is, how PDF is what the real world should be. I guess I was just to trusting of others, my bad.

I do have to agree, y'all do seem to walk through a door that when that door closses their is nothing but all goodness, you can kick people out, but they will come back around and jump the fence again in the back field. They can get back on the wagon and sit in the middel so they can't be seen. If they want back in they will do so. I only piped in on this thread to let Jen know she is not the only one.

As for Lee, it pisses me off that it was stolen, *SIGH* back to CDs for performances. It was a bran new IPOD. Yes I meet good people, but they can't return my personal property. I do hope it brings them enjoyment, I hope they learn new music, but I am also a Massage therapist that only has about 5 clients a month. SO it is not like I am rich and can get a new one because some shit faced D Bag wants to feel free to help them selfs to others belongings. Maybe PDF should have the VETS do rangering from now on, maybe they will get shit done if the Rangers are their to just send people to a corner and have time out.

As being a virgin burner this year it has put real bad tast in my mouth about PDF. The vibe I did get was this was a big frat party. Yes I did meet good peps, but their was a 1000 people their and I can't meet all of them.

Like I said IF I do return in the Fall, I will bring just what I need, a few outfits and my fire tools, and not the hearse.

Take this post to how you want to, I don't realy care.

IF you volunteer to be a ranger, don't drink or par take in any other activites. Plain and simple. Open your eyes and realise you can make the tickets $500 or free, the point is if someone is going to steal, they will do it no matter how rich they are or poor. They still will do it.
    • Please, you have the right to voice any opinion, but please do not try to enforce a rule that does not exist. Rangers are allowed to have a drink or two. I don't think I've ever had more than 1 beer during a 6 hour shift, it never affected my ability to do what I needed to do.

It IS beneficial for them to know about theft afterwards, even if it is too late to help you out personally. How does knowing it now help me (or any other ranger) keep a better eye out for people entering cars and tents that aren't theirs? But - it's ultimately up to you to act as you see fit regarding the matter. I just take strong offense at having arbitrary rules placed on rangers when it goes against what we are told at training. If you wish to take up the matter with those in charge of the ranger training process, I can give you the names of people to talk to. If your stance is that important to you, talk to those who CAN make that change in policy.
      • I should say, this isn't just for Gypsy - anyone who objects to any policy at PDF should discuss it with those who can change it. Ask why things are they way they are now, and why they would or would not consider changing it.
        • What I was just saying is that from what I have heard, when you volunteer to do a Ranger, I was told that you should not drink or be on anything. So as a new be, and I saw this, I was wondering how serious of a job they are, I also know of another ranger, and he breaths fire, Well not only does he breath fire unsafely and he is not a good roll model for the fire spin community, ( I have a feeling I am going to get shit for this one) but when I found out he is a ranger also, made me wonder. considering he has told me outside of PDF that we don't need a safety for fire. HMMMM makes me wonder even more.

I am not going to call out people, and like I said that is what I heard about the rangers that they don't want you to be all messed up.
          • hey I can understand, especially if you were told otherwise. but I've sat through training 3 times, and it's MORE THAN CLEAR each time that you may drink on duty. you may not get shitfaced. basically, if you are collected enough to talk to cops if needed, that's where the line is. if people can't figure out that line for themselves, they shouldn't drink at all.

There are a wide range of what people consider "safe" in the fire community, I'm sure you've seen that. we can disagree and try to teach them otherwise, but a different opinion doesn't necessarily mean they are a poorer ranger for it. Rangers are not taught fire safety at all, except that if they see someone without a safety on hand, to recommend getting one and/or keep an eye on the situation. Knowledge of fire performance or lack of does not indicate how responsible a ranger is.

Comes down to - rangers are just people like you. Some may know more than others. I like the sober friend analogy best - maybe your designated driver has faults and does not stop you from certain stupid acts, it doesn't make them less of a friend. Rangers are there to help you if you need it, and reach help QUICKLY if serious help is necessary.

I feel badly that you got a poor impression of rangers, or maybe a misunderstanding... I do hope that if you found enough positive things at PDF that you'll return, and be open to learning more about the ranger role, whether you choose to be one or not. We need more people who are serious about fire safety, and take the role of ranger responsibly (without stepping out of line into "enforcer" territory - rangers should always be approachable.) I think you could contribute a lot to the community in these areas.
    • There = Use there when referring to a place, whether concrete ("over there by the building") or more abstract ("it must be difficult to live there").

Their = Use their to indicate possession. It is a possessive adjective and indicates that a particular noun belongs to them. My friends have lost their tickets.

They're = Remember that they're is a contraction of the words they and are. Hurry up! They're closing the mall at 6 tonight!

at least get your ignorant pity party posts grammatically correct for god's sake, please!
      • Smoke kitty, your post looks a lot like the work of a drunken grammar ranger. Are you willing to submit yourself to the ranger sobriety test?
        • Gypsy, i am truly sorry you had a bad experience, but you are an extreme minority. In all the literature for PDF, no where does it promise safety for your personal belongings. In fact, radical self reliance means taking care of your stuff. There are FAR more people who would return your stuff if found on the ground than take it from your car, but those people who would take it simply exist. You also don't know if the people who are the bad apples bought a ticket, were virgins who experienced burners miss-read and brought, or local townies who snuck in, something you admit is a possibility.

It is very unfair for you to throw PDF away as a "frat party". I've been to frat parties, they fucking suck. at a frat party all girls have to watch their drinks and be on constant watch for scum bags. at frat parties you have to literally hold your valuables in your hand to ensure they aren't stolen. The booze is usually awful, the music stinks, and the food is usually nothing more than chips. I have always had wonderful experiences with PDF. I actually left belongings at other camps, and found them returned to my camp the next morning.

I hope you will return and have a better experience, but blaming volunteer rangers, or the nature of people who come to or plan PDF serves no purpose. The person who stole your ipod most likely doesn't read this blog.
          • Hey, gypsy, you can have my Ipod if you want it... if it'll make you feel better. I can mail it out in a bubble pack from work... only if you come to another burn though.

Twice at playa I've lost my camera. Once my virgin burn. It was 2 weeks old then and I had just paid $400 for it and the memory card in it. We searched for 3 hours after we realized it was gone only to find out that someone had found it last night and locked themselves into their trailer with it for safekeeping until they work up/regained consciousness... The best part, I was identified as the owner because I told him how to turn it on.

The second time (same camera), I'm not sure where I lost it, but it made it's way back to the lost and found for monday morning.

So the way I see it, over the course of a couple burns, I've saved over $800 bucks... where do I mail that Ipod to?
            • Oh and anyone... if you think the rangers need to do a better job, volunteer to be one next burn. Learn the job and do it well, right? I mean, the theft sucks, but if you dropped your new whatever in the mud and it was ruined who would you blame?

If it means that much, leave it at home.
    • Here is the real issue Jason... If you were in downtown York, Harrisburg, Carlisle... would you leave an ipod on the seat of a car and walk away? Of course you wouldn't... just because we are at PDF doesn't mean the shitty people of the world all the sudden become good people.

I'm glad Missy found your iPod.

      Chili~
  • OK this has gotten out of hand, I only responded to what Jen has said, and now instead people being aware that PDF is not some fairytale land and that you should be more cautious of stuff. I am being attacked.

Yes I did not have the greatest time in my life. I do have some enjoyable moments, but more bad then good.

I am not blaming no one for what happened. If I was going to do that, I would have said I did not put the IPOD into the car, which I did not, but yes soly it is my responsibility to make sure things are out of sight. I failed to so it is my fault no one else's.

I am sure the Rangers do a great job, and IF I do come in the Fall, I will sign up to be one. I honestly don't care if I am liked or disliked. I am a caring person, but fuck with my shit, and I am not a caring person. I will give my shirt off my back, Not my IPOD. Yes if someone needs more then me, then I can't stop them, and their is a reason for them taking it. I guess I will have to dish out another $150.

This PDF has been an eye opener, and IF I do return, then like I said before, I am not bringing my hearse, I am bringing a small bag of cloths, and my fire stuff. That way I have no worries of dishonest people. Before you even say it, yes I know they can take that to if the want. Yes I said before you.

Come on people open your eyes. PDF is a camp out, it has a good meaning, and some of the people their have a good sence of community. but reality is it is a party.
I have meet a lot of good people. I am not closing that out. I have seen that the sense of caring is their. I have also had no luck with my first burn of a "good time" like I thought. I am willing to give stuff a second try, and if I do, it will be different.

So now can we vent and target other negativity to something else? I was just saying what I saw and heard, did not need or want to start a bitch fest to what I said.

    • You really have no idea what you are talking about and are starting to piss me off. You have the balls to make blanket statements about a group of people that you didn't bother to even get to know because you were SO angry all weekend that you couldn't see straight!

Please do me a favor... don't come back to PDF until you are willing to open your mind and get past your own mistakes of leaving a car unlocked with windows open and expect everything to be safe and secure!

      Chili~
  • A couple of thoughts: and this isn't the first time we've had this discussion.

    1) I think Smelly Melly is right, we need to be more careful how we talk up this event. Even if we value partying and geting fu**ed up, telling the baseball cap crowd at the local frat party might not make the event better for the future. When you talk up
pdf, maybe we should be talking up art (THAT should scare them) and community.

    2) Maybe during major burns and events, those of us who ranger should spend a bit less time patrolling the burn perimeter and a bit more patrolling the camps for interlopers.

    3) Maybe in the survival guide and WWW, we should punch up either leaving valuables at home, keeping them on your person, or locking them in your trunk.

    Mungp
    • i usually describe it as a music and art festival. i have a sort of method of bringing virgins. first i expose the to fire spinning. if they show interest, or even decide to take it up, I start talking about this wonderful festival where there is music and art and FIRE. I only mention "party" once i am sure they are into it for the "right reasons".
PDF IS a party. Party doesn't have to mean "frat party" or something ridiculous like that. It can mean a gathering of like minded people who throw the hell down, bond, and enrich their lives together.

Just a side note, this makes me think about my real life and discussions i have. I am very into the world of news and politics. Right now, our country is in a quandary about how to "stay safe". What ends are we willing to go to ensure our freedom. My personal take is that if we sacrifice any liberty for the superficial sense of safety, we have damaged what our country really is.
before we start thinking up ways to ensure PDF stays "pure", let's think about how those methods may actually damage the soul of the event. If i go to PDF and i do it the way i always have, and the event runs the way it always has, and i lose some money, or an Ipod, I can know it happened because I was doing what i wanted the way I wanted to do it.
not to start of a political banter.. i know other blogs where i can get into those fights :)
      love ya all
      ~A
  • OK time to get the shit rolling this time. I just received a phone call tonight saying your IPOD is in my purse. When my ex went into the tent Friday night she must have put it in her purse. She said she don't know why cause she never touched her purse. I am sorry to start shit and I know I am going to get more shit and be a bigger ass. OH well I am just happy that some shit head did not take it.

So go ahead not start the shit talk, and IF I still come back next Fall I am still packing light.
    • oh give it a rest dude. no one cares that you overreacted a little. maybe you can use this happy turn of events to re assess your whole view of the burn
      • WEll I just wanted everyone know that it did comeup. Considering how the events turned towards me. IF and when you do get to know me, you will learn that i am not that bad of a person, well right now some might think diferent, BUt anyways, that might have been the best thing that has happen.

A good posability I might be back, depending on what state I am living in. Time will tell, and if anything their is another regonal event somewhere in the US. So I might, still considering the options
    • I told you it was misplaced. I do it to my stuff all of the time so I never get worked up until at least 6 months pass and it still hasn't shown up:) I just went through it with my own IPOD a few weeks ago thinking that it fell out of my pocket at Fairie Fest! It happens to all of us and as you get older it gets worse.
I think that you have a lot to contribute to PDF and I can guarantee that the Fall will be so much better! The Fall is always a lot more personal and an entirely different entity!! Plus, I haven't painted you yet!!:)

      ~Chelas
    • Well, they don't call me Calamity (and sometimes Bender) for nothing. What can I say? Revenge of hippie memory. I packed away the boombox on Friday night and I guess took the IPOD and put it in the my purse. I didn't touch my purse for the rest of the Burn and then found it in there on Thursday night. I apologize for all the grief this has caused and I am more than willing (eager in fact) to take a beating at Redbottom for it.

      CJ
      • No one thinks you're a bad person. Maybe you had your head a bit up your ass, but we all do a self-exam on our colon every so often. No big deal.

I hope your faith is restored and next time you won't assume the worst. Just about every PDF I lose at least one thing. Most the time I find it in my stuff sometime later, sometimes over a year later. One time it was my cell phone and it took two days to turn up, but it finally did. I have one headlamp that I have lost three times at least. I've never had anything stolen at PDF in the 11 I have attended, and I think I've only permanently lost two things. I'm 100% positive I lost them too unless there was a skilled pick pocket working PDF and I was their only target both times.

I'm sure some theft happens at PDF, but it is pretty minimal. Lock up or hide your valuables, make friends with those camped near you so they will notice if someone else is going through your tent, but otherwise have fun and don't worry about it. And the most important thing to remember, no of the material crap we bring to PDF is actually important. It might suck and being really inconvenient, but it isn't the end of the world.
  • I do admit that i might have over reacted, but when I found out about it being missing and the events of the weekend, I was like great, one more thing. Yes I might have had my head up my ass, I have been homeless before and lost everything I owned, and I came back. I kow it is materialistic, but like I said after everything that had happen, I did get pissed. Calamity did call and said she was soprry, oh well shit happens.

Just like when you lose $36.00.
    • I Love You Guys hahaha

      HOLY CRAP!
I posted one thing as a shout out to a jerky somebody and it turned into mass chaos and drama.
I was beginning to worry about this immense negativity that I had started on the playa.
I was getting very worried and upset.
People were getting offensive too whiny
(not to say I myself wasn't to blame)
      etc.
Many forgot to mention how happy PDF had made us at the same time.
I felt guilty and angry at those who were dissing my what I consider my home.
Then with one discovery of a silly ipod everyone's spirits are lifted.
      Things have been forgiven
and all seems to be in good cheer again.

      I love you all
and how easily pleased we all can be.
I can't wait to hug you all at the playa in the fall!!!

      Hahahahahhaha
    • and hey I didn't overreact and continually go on and on and on and on and on and on and on about my situation.
Nor did I dis many of the playa and people's home. I simply called out to one jerky individual and let them know and others that we are watching for them and there misdeeds.
Thanks for participating and making my forum so long though. It makes me proud when I create an interesting topic
      • I still new to the community and havenow been to 4 PDF's. I have met so many amazing people and the on a whole the community is not necessarily a way of life I had been exposed or acccustomed to. I learn more and appreciate life more each day from the people I know and have met or are involved and its Not just PDF twice a year. Its the whole sense of community that I have seen time and time again carried back into the DC/Baltimore area, shared and displayed throughout the year. Some of the best Get togethers, events of all kinds and experiences I am having in the DC metro area are those involving the "Burner" community and I am thankful for each individual, and especially those whoe genuinely care about the community, AND the individuals and freinds. I have had some good chats with many of my newish friends in this community about many things and it is awesome to see the genuine sharing and caring of thoughts Ideas and concerns.. People talk about how at any event we are not isolated from the outside world, But what I love even more is how this environment can be carried out into the streets of DC and shared in many different ways throughout the year. I have truly come to be thankful and appreciate this "family" and community. A sense of communtity really makes many events activities that notch better and more memorable, and its nice to see people who really care about others without judgement or forcingthere ways down your throat. And Know a couple who have truly helpe me..

Thanks to all, I love Pony people...
  • well this poses an interesting question. what were you doing with money in a gift economy, Jen? ;-)

i'm joking of course. as much as we'd all like to think that burns & Burning Man are these bastions of utopia for most of us, at the same time we must remember that this is technically a festival, and when you participate in or attend a festival you must ALWAYS take precautions. a mantra i always follow: "love everyone, trust no one".

but look at the bright side: at least your camera didn't get stolen. that's happened to a few friends of mine and it SUCKS because not only are you out a couple hundred dollars, but you've also been robbed of all the great pictures you took!

It's SOOO sad that THIS topic wins the WindBag Award with 149 replies so far! Couldn't somebody have just taken a dump at Fireside Lounge instead of pitifully stealing cash and then causing this long discussion of Theft and Moral terpitude encroachment into our PDF community?! Sheeesh!

i have to pee really bad from reading this for the past 2 hours straight
yes hours of thought provoking information and raw human emotion - in the form of words. words won't keep a thief away from easy prey.
FORTIFY THE PLAYA! we can put tower of power near the gates...or maybe a spoil of barbed wire would do the trick.
i did hear about groups of people sneaking in so it might be time to have more then "greeters" at night on gate shift so the event can remain pure. i'm 99% sure that's where the problem is coming from - outside the community invaders.
this is so much better then reality tv

oh someone mentioned about wallet getting stolen at arThough - pretty sure that was an incident contained to members of that camp
      • Re: erection time

        Tue, June 2, 2009 - 9:27 PM
i think a lot of the people sneaking in were determined burners who couldn't get a ticket due to not enough being available, instead of "outsiders", i mean sure they were misguided but one of the 10 principles of burning man is being inclusive! there are no outsiders! :)
        • Re: erection time

          Wed, June 3, 2009 - 5:35 AM
Purchasing a ticket is still purchasing a ticket and wrong if you don't IMO. The way I see it, if you were to be at this particular burn, you would have ended up with a ticket ;-) As deeply as it would sadden me, I, myself, could not ever sneak into PDF, the guilt of it would weigh too heavil
    • Re: LONGEST THREAD OF Spring PDF 2009

      Wed, June 3, 2009 - 8:17 AM
Hey Hey! I dont do that anymore! Get with the program.

It does bug me that this has become such a problem. I responded to ongoings at ArtThou. And like it was said before, I do not have the power to kick someone out. I noted the problem to make other rangers aware of it. After seeing the same issue, shift after shift, something WILL be done. No 'buts' about it. But if you dont let anyone know, then you might as well just ignore that it happened.

As for the negative comments about the rangers abilities, yeah you know what, we cant kick someone out. We are not cops. Its not going to happen. What we CAN do is be that sober friend when you need it. We can get you the help that you need. Lord only knows how much of that help I needed, and that I why I give back now.

  • wow....
this post is very negative in every way.
why can't there be 160 replys of positive things?
why is it this thread has the most replys?
this is so not what any burn should be like.
if i never went to a burn reading this would persuade not to go. people threatening eachother, making it look like a horrible plase.
    honestly people...
    • Unfortunately, theft does happen, even at events where 99.9% of the people are fabulous. We need to be aware of it, protect our belongings, and go on about our good time. I've had about $200 of fire/practice gear stolen at raves. Now, I can no longer let people use my stuff when they come up and ask.

There may be 500 lovely people present, but it only takes one theif to steal something. I had my favorite pair of leather pants - and sadly, one of the only pairs of pants I've ever owned that actually fit me well - stolen out of the performers' dressing room at PEX's Heartburn 2008. The pants were taken about 20 minutes after I changed out of them (and back into my flamable costume) - most likely by a fellow performer who'd seen me take them off and hid them in a bag (I think I know who, but don't have evidence...). Those pants were so awesome to spin fire in, and I haven't been able to replace them. Sigh.

On another note, I've heard many stories of Burner generosity - of people helping one another out at burns - sharing food, shelter, offering support, etc. The generous, community-friendly people at Burner events are, by far, the majority.
      • I think many of the "discussions" on Tribe could be mitigated -and grammatical errors/typos corrected! - if folks could edit or delete what they've written - like on f-book. Sometimes, after you've vented and seen your words up on the screen, ya just wanna take 'em back, again. Y'know what I mean?
  • back to the original, money - stealing issue..

    Sat, June 13, 2009 - 10:35 AM
you didn't happen to leave it on a chair by the road facing PEX, did you?
I was thinking about it,and remember now that i was going to get my glasses from the chair after the battle and saw money laying there, kind of half in and half out of (what i think was) my friend's bag - which, to my fuzzy recollection, was the only one there. i shoved it inside and started playing with the parachute, then our crew stormed the towers, and i totally forgot and never said anything to anyone about it.. so, if that was your money, it was a case of mistaken ownership, not intentional douuchbaggery. perhaps we can find a way to get it back to you.
  • Le sigh...

A good portion of this thread makes me a sad panda.
While I didn't read the WHOLE thread, because it's incredibly long.. I did read a good portion of it.

This was my first burner event, and therefore, my first PDF. I camped with Pound On The Playa.

I loved it, and I will be back in the fall to celebrate life with my new found family of burners. People say "Welcome Home" quite frequently at the event, and really, I understand why they do.. because it has become a home for me as well.

To address some things said here though:

First of all I want to address the idea of the ticket prices being raised. I think you're wonderful Chelas, but that is a TERRIBLE idea. It will not discourage people from stealing, it will not discourage people from sneaking in, and it will not discourage people from bringing children. While PDF is an amazing atmosphere and while one would hope no one would purposefully steal from someone.. things like that DO happen, regardless of where you go, and thus you should be intelligent about your stuff. I don't bring money into the event, nor wallets, ID, etc. We also keep all of our clothing, intoxicants, food, fire toys, etc in our tents. But even without taking all those precautions my boyfriend and I had nothing stolen from us. We had to leave late saturday night after the big burn and therefore decided to pack up and put everything away ahead of time. Due to this we had our tent down and all of our belongings out in the open for most of the day(no one likes to get heat stroke so we took many breaks, plus we still wanted to enjoy the festivities throughout the day).. and not a single thing went missing. The vet who drives the tractor was even nice enough later that day, when he saw that we had to tear down early and that we were in the far back field, to offer to take us and all of our stuff directly to our vehicle so we wouldn't have to make multiple trips hauling it all to the car... and we took him up on that offer. The thing is though with stealing that one's wealth, or lack thereof, doesn't make one a thief.. both rich and poor people steal.. because of lack of moral fiber within themselves.
Also, people have to remember that things get mistakenly taken, to check lost and found, and to report it to a ranger... most individuals who go to this event are good people and if they know you're missing something, and happen to find it, chances are it'll make it's way back to you. I agree with those who say that a big part of it is probably random people sneaking in, and we need to figure out some way to stop that from happening. I have a feeling a lot of it may be happening from the back way in as the front one always has people on greeter shifts watching out for that. As far as raising tickets prices discouraging people from bringing children goes.. it probably wouldn't. They'd just end up spending more money than they already are. Besides that, it is my personal opinion that children shouldn't be excluded from this event. It is their parents choice whether or not to bring them, and thus their parents responsibility for what they do, and what they see. At the same time the parents need to respect individual's boundaries; meaning that if you think you wouldn't be comfortable doing something in front of your child(i.e. trampoline blowjobs, lol), don't bring that child to where others are doing things of such nature because chances are they won't be very comfortable with having a child watch them do said things either, whether or not it's their own.. and we don't want to make people uncomfortable about radical self expression. That would be a big no no. At the same time, we want to include everybody, and that means allowing children to come to the event and respecting that the parents will be intelligent and responsible.

Secondly, I agree with smelly mel and others who say that wearing a wristband at all times should be mandatory. This would definitely make it notice-able if someone had snuck in. Aside from that, the wristbands are pretty resilient.. they don't break easily at all.. and if, by some chance, yours happened to break, you should be able to save it and immediately go up to the the participation station(being centralized for the most part) and get another one in my opinion.. but if and only if you obviously have a broken one that you can turn in. The broken ones should be saved and the numbers should be recorded as well as the commitee tallying everyone who leaves the event on the last day so that they can tell exactly how many were sold, how many were given due to broken ones, and how many people left at the end.. so that they can get an estimate on how many people are sneaking in. Yes, it would make leaving more time consuming for everyone if there was a headcount of how many people leave last day, but it would be worth it in my opinion.

Thirdly, for anyone who dislikes the vets or their guest etc.. why? I personally find them amazing. Part of what makes PDF is themselves. They invite us all to so graciously stay on their land and they do this because they understand us and our lifestyles. Aside from that the majority of vets I had the pleasure of meeting were very kind, as I mentioned earlier in this post about the vet who drove the tractor. I also had the pleasure of hanging out with some of the vets on the OTHER side of the road, at their own RV, and frankly.. that moment itself is one of my favorites times at PDF because I realized how amazing those people really are.. and I felt so honored to be allowed to hang out with them(partially since it was at their area.. where one isn't supposed to venture without express permission, but more so because of how amazing they are). Neither myself, nor any family/personal friends that went were harassed by the vets, their guests, or their children as far as I know. The vets who weren't fully out there and sociable etc, were in the least tolerant, polite, and quiet while giving us no grief.

Fourthly, to address Jason(aka Gypsy Jay). You made your own time what it was. You have no one to blame, but yourself, for how you felt. As far as heat exhaustion goes.. you do civil war re-enactments and therefore know how to avoid it, and how to take care of yourself if you do get it. Frankly, the fact that you got it and were so miserable about it, had to do with your own misgivings, and was your own fault.. and I think part of it was about attention, whether negative or positive, but I won't get into that. As far as your things being stolen, You'll probably find the flashlight, and we now know that Calamity Jane had misplaced the IPOD and it is once again in your possession. As far as seeing rangers drink.. no one ever told you they weren't allowed to. What was told to you was that they weren't allowed to get shit faced... and that is the truth. That's all I have to say about all that though... the rest I'm holding my tongue about, it's stupid to argue and I hope that you would have gotten a better experience out of it. I hope you go during fall, and DO get a better experience out of it. Just remember, it's all about your frame of mind, perception, and how honest and open you can be with yourself and others while following the burner lifestyle code of conduct.

Fifth, I also agree with those who say we need to be careful about how we talk up the event, and who we talk it up to. Before telling someone it's the best party you'll ever go to in your life.. mention the art, the ideals, have them read the website.. then show them pictures, and video. Introduce them to it properly, like I was introduced to it. Have discussion about what goes on, how it all fits together. Stress community and participation, as well as radical self reliance, and radical self expression.

And one last thing, while this event was different from previous events, more rave-like, and not as good in many people's personal opinions from what I've read and heard so far(and on that subject I have no opinion, it being my virgin burn and all, except to say that I've been to many raves.. and that was NOT, let me repeat, NOT rave-like.. I mean, sure, aspects of it are.. but it goes way way way way way way way beyond that, and you all should know that.. and if you don't, then go to a rave and see the difference for yourself.).... I would like to quote something from a post earlier in this thread:

"WE make this event. WE make it what it is. WE make it what it will be and WE are responsible for its future. Speak up if you're being treated poorly and please, KEEP COMING!!!!"

and to add to it.. WE also make our OWN experience of the event. It's all about frame of mind, and perception. If you have a shitty time, it's because you CHOSE to have a shitty time. Yes, shitty things can happen to you due to outside circumstances and people, but if you choose to let them dictate your experience they will, if you don't...... they won't.
