My husband and I have just returned from our first PDF and I have to say what an amazing time we both had! I did three cartwheels for a delicious grilled cheese sandwhich and I never thought I'd see the day when my normally shy husband would be swinging around a stripper pole for an alcoholic beverage. The level of equal participation and acceptance from everyone you came into contact with was astounding.
I did have a rather odd reaction that I didn't anticipate. It took me quite some time to get used to the fact that nothing cost anything. I kept having to be reminded of that fact; I guess because the travails of everyday life all cost something. Also, the repeated generous offerings from other people throughout the event, while wonderful, kept throwing me off and I was surprised at the urgent desire to do something for them in return. But then I realized that nothing was expected from me in return, besides enjoying whatever it is that was offered.
I guess I didn't realize how jaded I'd become and for that reason alone I am so grateful that we had a chance to experience an awakening of sorts. I've been reconnected with the good things that people are capable of.

Re: First PDF
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 7:43 AMHi we're the ones with the grilled cheese. :) Firstly we want to thank you for swigning by our camp, and for the cartwheels, they're always entertaining.
Secondly, PDF is definitely an experience. The fact that you can go somewhere where the vast preponderance of people are interested in nothing other than making sure not only they, but everyone else has a great time is not only refreshing, but I feel a truly vital experience in ones life. We're all a little bit jaded. "The real world" has us all trained to ignore each other. We have our circle of people with whom we regularly communicate and we rarely move outside of that. PDF isn't any fun if you take that philosophy, you have to participate, and participation means communicating with a lot of new people.
We're glad that we were able to be a couple of those people. Hope to see you in fall for some more cart wheels, some more grilled cheese, and some more fun.

Re: First PDF
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 7:03 PMI totally relate to your experience. I went to my first in October. My reaction was much like yours. I couldn't believe how amazing the people were or the tremendous feeling of community and belonging. As corny as it sounds, I felt like I'd just discovered myself and what life is really supposed to be about. Since the fall I haven't stopped talking about PDF to any and everyone I associate with. Most of my friends don't understand, but I keep telling them, if you go once, you'll never miss another one. I am so happy to have found this place where I can come out of my shell and just be. Glad you found it too!
Hope to see you in the fall. Stop by camp SPF for PDF and say hello. -

Thu, June 25, 2009 - 6:57 AMAwesome! I know exactly what your talking about. It's almost like becoming a parent for the first time and you can't help but corner everyone you know so that they too can experience the pure wonder that comes with creating life. I'm so looking forward to the fall one and I'll definetly have to stop by!
