www.flickr.com/photos/mer...8784813029/
Beneath "Playa del Fuego 2009," click Detail for a photo album-like view.
Photos from PDF 2007 are at:
www.flickr.com/photos/mer...7312953615/
For your privacy, I left the copyright restrictions on many of the photos, but if you want copies (or want photos deleted), just send me the link(s) to the respective photo(s).
And, as Lars wrote in his post, :
"If you use my photos, please click on "all sizes" above the image, pick the size you want, and then cut and paste the HTML from the bottom of the screen. Its easy. For crap-tastic sites like tribe that make you upload images, Please give me credit.
Copy and paste this to the description of the photo:

Re: PDF Photos from the Redhead
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 12:49 PMYay for fast. Its tempting to get a 16-35mm f/2.8L and a 70-200mm f/2.8L to add to your new zoom and cover your range with zooms at f/2.8, but going fast has some serious advantages. Plus thats a lot of heavy glass. :) Not that I don't LOVE those lenses.
The EF 85mm f/1.2L is my favorite lens ever. Unarguably the best portrait lens out there hands down. (gorgeous creamy soft backgrounds)
If you prefer a wider lens, the 50mm f/1.2L is awesome for ultra-low light shots. It comes in a f/1.8 as well, and I have the f/2.0. Its also a good portrait lens. They call it the nifty 50. The f/2.0 has poor build quality but the f/1.8 and f/1.2 are great.
The 35mm f/1.4L is SWEET. I have the EF35mm f/2.0 and its the best lens I own. I did all my warehouse work these last couple weeks with it.
Here is a review of the fast L glass I'm talking about. Everything you need to know. One down, 3 to go:
www.the-digital-picture.com/Revi....aspx
If you want to look at other brands I'm also a big fan of the Sigma (canon EF) 30mm f/1.4. Its a great lens for the XTi. It approximates a 50mm lens on a 35mm film body. Great lens for beginners to replace the kit zoom with.
Make sure you use lens hoods. They protect the lens (I dont even use UV filters) and give you better contrast and saturation with all that light coming at the lens from all directions from the sky and bright playa. It also keeps dust out more than you'd think.
When your lens bag starts to get too heavy I can give them new homes, no worries. I run a no-kill Canon EF shelter. :)

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 7:52 AMThanks, Lars! Yeah, I'm making some serious photog investments this summer (including getting a Macbook Pro and Photoshop). Exciting!!!
;>9
I'm going to start working on the photography aspects of a BM book project this summer. Not sure yet if the writer is still on board, but if not, it'll just hafta be a book of photographs! -
-
Re: Lenzez
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 1:02 PMVery cool. Consider a second camera body for BM to avoid lens changes. And always use lens hoods, there is so much light bouncing off the playa and sky. It also protects the lens from damage and keeps a lot of dust out. I don't even use UV filters with hoods.
You can also rent nice glass. If I shot a wedding I'd rent a couple L lenses for example.
Glass is a better investment than cameras though. You'll be using these same lenses 5 cameras from now. And they hold their value well.
Look into lightroom before you jump into photoshop. I use lightroom all the time and I hardly ever use photoshop at all. Lighroom really speeds up your workflow. Its really just a photographer-oriented interface to the same photoshop engine underneath.
Books with just photos are the best kind!

Re: PDF Photos from the Redhead
Sun, June 14, 2009 - 2:08 AMI shot the PDF Fire Conclave tonight and my camera performed terribly. Normally, it won't shoot if the auto focus isn't working, but tonight I shot hundreds of intolerably blurry photos. Right now, I just wanna smash it against a wall.
My local camera shop didn't have any lenses to rent, but said they could sell me the 70-200 f/2.8L for $1,500!!!! (And now, of course, I *really* want it!) Thanks for the cheaper recommendations - I'm gonna pick up a nifty 50 right away! -

Re: PDF Photos from the Redhead
Sun, June 14, 2009 - 10:05 AMNight autofocus is a pain in the ass. Usually there is enough light from the flames hitting the performer for the AF to find and edge to focus on. I would think in a conclave there would be so much light the problem might be the AF point picking the wrong performer or even the ground near them.
When I shoot with a canon ST-E2 wireless flash controller it has a red light that projects bars of light that spread out with distance. Then the camera can look at how far apart they are and determine how to focus. This works just fine even if you don't have any flashes set up. It can focus on a flat white wall in pitch darkness. Its $200, and a bit expensive JUST for night autofocus, but if you need it... it does work.
Of course a 580ex-II flash has the same focus assist mechanism and doesn't use an expensive battery.
The focus assist lamp on the XTi is so useless I turned it off in the custom menus. Its completely useless (other than to annoy the subject).
You may have had something else weird go on. Shooting fire you're usually at a high f-stop which should make your depth of field large enough that even an AF focus error shouldn't result in lens blur... so I am not really sure.
Yeah, I want a 70-200L as well. After trying one out, I have to say compared to the knock-off's in that zoom range it's worth the money.
I know there are places in DC that do lens rentals. Penn Camera on E street is one: www.penncamera.com/Rental.html
If you can't find anything local you can always go with this: www.lensrentals.com/

Re: PDF Photos from the Redhead
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 1:10 PMhey i'm having trouble getting theses photos. When I right click to save it comes up labeled spaceball and I can't save the image.. :( any suggestions? -
-
Re: PDF Photos from the Redhead
Fri, June 5, 2009 - 10:01 PMImages with notes in them (things that show up when you hover the mouse over them) will not download that way and you get the spaceball thing.
Click on "all sizes" above the image. If you read the part of her post that she quoted me on you'd know this already. :p
