Since Spring PDF '09 was my official introduction to the fire arts, I thought I would give something back to the PDF community in the fall now that I have acquired some skill in the medium. So, I will be hosting spinning workshops in the afternoon, every day this coming PDF. When I finalize the schedule I will submit it to the What/Where/When publication, but I thought I would put the word out here first to stir up interest and get some feedback. I intend for the workshops to be useful for beginners and advanced fire performers alike. I myself am primarily a poi spinner, but I also play with rope dart and meteor. I will do multiple workshops, each with a different focus, so as to cater to everyone's interests and skill level: beginner/intermediate poi, advanced poi, fire safety, and an open category for object manipulation besides poi spinning. If I can get some hoopers/staff spinners/jugglers, etc. to volunteer perhaps I will subdivide the open category. Fire safety will be the final lesson of the day, perhaps followed by a spin jam after the sun goes down. I will bring extra sock poi for beginners, and will be happy to lend some of my fire equpiment, but participants are encouraged to bring their own toys.
Anyone who is interested in helping me with these workshops, please post here or feel free to send me a PM. I am looking in particular for non-poi performers, especially if you do anything strange or unusual with fire. Also, I would love to hear any requests for what you would like to learn at PDF this fall.
See you on the playa!

Re: Spinning workshops
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 1:00 AMNunchucks. And I plan to make a few extra 'practice' sets.
The ones I have are three varieties: UV taped (like hoops), Clear soft plastic with LED's, and of course, fire.
I always let people play with mine ,and often gift them away (or just lose them! haha!) and it's always a joy to see someone who can translate something like firestick (closest relative) to stick-with-chain-in-middle.
Saw a guy this summer who did THREE part nunchacku, totally blew me away. Made those once when I was a kid, but didn't have a clue how to really use them, so i gave it up.
Would love to help out! -

Re: Spinning workshops
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 10:18 AMAwesome! One thing I find really interesting is the similaries and differences between staff, nunchaku, and meteor moves. Do you have a background in martial arts? I enjoy working with people coming from that end of the spectrum as you tend to get a different perspective than someone who started out with fire performance. Hopefully Terry will make it to PDF...I havn't heard if he was able to get a ticket or not. Anyway, he spins staff and chucks, both in a martial arts setting before he started playing with fire. I'm sure the two of you woud have fun together:) Anyway, thanks for the feedback; I will be posting an outline for the schedule later today so keep an eye out and let me know if the times work for you.

Preliminary schedule
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 12:38 PMExact times are subject to change when I go through and double check for any scheduling conflicts, but here is what I have so far:
Friday
noon-1PM beginner poi
subjects covered: plane control, 2 and 3 beat weaves
1-2PM Intermediate/advanced poi
subjects covered: 5-beat weaves, flowers/antispin, fountains
2-4 PM open workshop: martial arts and fire performance
subjects covered: rope dart, meteor, staff, chucks, and swordplay
4-5 PM fire safety
subjects covered: fire safety equipment, basic fire safety protocol
10 PM--?? spin jam!
Saturday
noon-1PM beginner/intermediate poi
subjects covered: split time, weave variations, butterflies and related variations
1-2PM advanced poi
subjects covered: isolations, spiral wraps, hyperloops
5PM-7PM (or immediately following the fire conclave meeting) open workshop
subjects covered: group choreography/collaboration, fire safety for group performance. Members of the conclave are encouraged to come work out any last kinks in their performance before the big burn!
Sunday
noon-2PM beginner/intermediate poi
subjects covered: week in review
2-4PM advanced poi
subjects covered: whirling, crossers, footwork, dancing with poi, freedom of expression
4-6PM open workshop
subjects covered: hoop, fans, baton twirling, contact/juggling and other props/techniques that are specific to dancing and performance.
6-7PM fire safety
subjects covered: week in review
10-? spin jam!
As I mentioned before, the workshops will be hosted in the open area between the theme camps and pavilion. Location of the spin jams will be announced at the fire safety workshops. I don't expect everyone to learn all of the subjects covered in all of the workshops; it would probably be more constructive to focus on one subject per workshop to focus on. Also, since most of the workshops are run in consecutive time slots, participants are welcome to continue working on subjects from previous workshops, or to revisit subjects addressed earlier in the week. The only exception I would make to this is the fire safety workshops.
If there is anything you see here that you would be interested in helping teach, or if you would like to learn something not listed in the workshops, let me know!
Looking forward to everyone's feedback... -

Re: Spinning workshops
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 5:05 PMAfter receiving some very useful feedback from a few key individuals, I have decided to go a slightly different route with my spinning workshops...instead of having a regimented schedule, I am going to make all of the workshops open to all areas of interest and skill levels. Radical inclusion, baby! I will be teaching poi, rope dart, and my limited meteor skills to anyone who is interested, and I have a few others who have pledged their support to teach staff, chucks, fans and hoop. The workshops will last roughly 2 hours with the concluding portion dedicated to fire safety instruction. Look for the schedule in the WWW...I will have moved some things around to avoid scheduling conflicts.
So, come one, come all...spin your face off and set some shit on fire!

Re: Spinning workshops
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 1:04 PMI would love to have your assistance at my workshops! One of the reasons I decided to change the format was so that they would be open to everyone at all times, whether you are looking to teach or learn. I am hoping to attract enough people to make it interesting, regardless of their particular interest or skill level. Also, this way people will hopefully be exposed to all types of props and techniques, perhaps even experiencing something they never would have considered otherwise. I'm thinking of doing the workshops in two hour blocks, the first one starting at noon on Friday. So, bring your fans, and double check the WWW once you arrive; all you have to do is show up and pitch in!
Again, thanks to everyone for your input, especially to those who have pledged their suppport. I am looking forward to working with all of you!
See you soon...

Re: Spinning workshops
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 1:45 PMHey everyone, I just posted the schedule for the workshops and spin jams on the WWW, so check it out!
Brad--there won't be a workshop strictly devoted to rope dart, but come by for the first workshop on Friday, or really any workshop after that, and I would be happy to work something out. Either we could work on rope dart right then and there, or we could schedule a serperate workshop if you like. I know I could certainly brush up on my rope dart skills...
Lars--I heard you are a juggler, is this true? While they are titled "spinning" workshops, really I welcome any type of object manipulation, and I for one would love to learn some juggling moves. -

Re: Spinning workshops
Sat, September 26, 2009 - 7:44 AMAwesome! I would be happy to lend you my fire dart, but I will warn you it is a bit scary! I have a monster monkeyfist wick which produces a giant ball of flame--definately not for the faint of heart. You can have as much time as you need to practice with it unlit, and if you feel comfortable, I would gladly safety for you. Try to make it to the first workshop on Friday if you can. It is scheduled from noon-2 but I will likely stay longer than that if there are people who still want to practice. -

Re: Spinning workshops
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 6:40 PMThanks!
I actually have a dart. I think I'll prefer to have my fire in one piece even if it's big.
I'll plan to see you around noon on Friday.
