Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:06 PMOr how about your experiences, good or bad? Just posting bad experiences will create a warped picture.
Personally, my PDF was great this year. Other people have told different stories, but I wasn't a victim of theft or hostility. The people I met were all really cool.

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:07 PMAlready way too many "Bad experience" posts.

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:19 PMThe only bad thing for me this PDF was that it had to come to an end. -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:25 PMI agree with that statement 100%. I say we have a week long burn! Or maybe a month. Or hell, lets go a indefinitely. Who knows how to grow barley and hops?

Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:38 PMme!
There is already a thread about how awful and sad this PDF was.( <sarcasm)
I don't think we need another. I was only let down a little with my girlfriend had to leave on sunday, than even more sad when i had to leave on monday. other than that, it was one happy moment after another. -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:39 PMYeah, I was kinda hoping more peeps would have gone with my "Here We Go" thread and continued to add memories/experiences, but no one has yet ;(

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:47 PMYeah this is my main bad. I want to go back now. Reality isn't as much fun! (though the selling of certain substances in our lounge was icky... no selling!!!) Personally I love that I don't have the bring any money into the site at PDF beyond a few bucks for ice! -
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 1:52 PMThat's one of my favorite parts about going to PDF. I can pack away my phone, wallet, and money and not have think about such things again until Monday.. and even that's fun because it's like a treasure hunt.... after a good, long weekend of PDF, I have no idea where I packed them away:)

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 4:43 PMi think the Blood sucking gnats were INCREDIBLY more annoying then the deer flies... the flies were slow and easily swattable. -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 9:31 PMa deer fly actually flew into my mouth while I was talking. it took me a moment to find him and spit him out. it was hillarious!

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 5:08 PMMy bad experience was after spinning fire all night at pex sunday night into mon morning the stupid sun came back like it does everyday =) Ok so I had a little drama and dumped a friend over PDF. I just can't be friends with someone that MOOPs, mooches, judges people for bing too weird at a burn and say lines like "most of these people really shouldn't be naked. The only people that shouldn't be naked are people uncomfortable being naked or fair skinned people in the daylight without sunblock =) -
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 5:11 PMoops I forgot the quotation marks that go after the "most of these people really shouldn't be naked" The last line was my opinion.

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 6:11 PMi was broken at pdf... No pdf did not break me bt I had some sort of broken and got worse while there...
but my "bad experience" has a twist...
It sucks being injured around 1000 people who care about you. Every 10 seconds I was turning down an offer for help if I was limping or walking funny.
thank you all.

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 6:53 PMCross posted from Good Experiences....
Sometime late Sunday night while speed wandering towards Ludo's from the Copter with everyone from Camp Crashpad (and hitting every stop on the way) I heard someone yell "HEY JUGS!" behind me... performing my patented drunken spin I greeted some people who at my level of intoxication must have been... well... erm... well they really have been anyone... That part is fuzzy.
I do remembeer this though.. The gentleman who yelled my name proceeded to explain to the ladyfriend he was walking with, "This is Jugs, he's like, the crazy drunken master... you should see some of the stuff he can do with that jug..."
Right around this point his female friend lifts up my hat to proclaim, "You're F**king Hot!"
It was at that very moment that one my campmates threw up the ultimate C-block, grabbed my arm and yelled, "JUGS! Quit flirting with that girl and lets go" Pulling at my arm, causing me to totally lose track of who it was I was being complimented by...
I musta had some super-bad-karma-juju for that one... *Fists to the heavens* -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Sat, May 30, 2009 - 9:31 PMActually I have to admit I missed too much of it for either sleeping or wandering around a bit too -um- fubar. On the other hand I did get to spin fire! On the other hand, not enough times, and that was my own fault. I also lost my keys (and several other things) but had these wonderful friends who took hours and hours out of their precious PDF time Monday to help me out, and I cannot say enough good things about them. YOu know who you are. Next time not so much fubar.

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 12:22 PMCouldn’t have said it better myself Brochacho. Except that every PDF I do is better then the last, and after every PDF there’s a thread (or 2) like this.
I mean I like to complain as much as the next guy but is nothing sacred? Have we as a people become so ungrateful that we have to bitch in the wake of such a beautiful event, that we ourselves not only make but are?

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 11:04 AMI only regret having a single moment of PDF flee my flawed memory... I got too drunk too often and now my recollection of home ( the playa, the love, the people, etc.) is blurred. I guess I just have to let it fade with history and start dreaming of Spring! (and bring less 40's and rum, more love and energy)

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 6:46 PMI'd like to offer some empathy to those who feel or felt the need to express negative thoughts about their experiences at PDF.
While I would love it if this community were filled only with good, positive and wonderful experiences for everyone, the truth is, that's not the case. Bad things do happen. And the only way to change them, grow from them, or perhaps have our eyes enlightened to another way of viewing those experiences, is to have a place to voice them. What better forum for expressing those thoughts than this Tribe?
It's one thing to encourage people to focus on the positive more than the negative, but it's another thing entirely to discourage people from sharing their negative experiences. By sharing these experiences, we all grow, we all learn, and we can help mold this community to be even more overwhelmingly positive than it already is.
Amidst the myriad of thankful, positive, loving threads on here, there are only a couple threads where people have dwelled on the negative. And I've read so many posts in those threads that seem to discourage the dialogue. Am I the only one who's uncomfortable with that? I'm not saying I agree with the negative viewpoints, or whether or not those opinions are at all reflective of my experience... what I am saying is if someone has something to say... good, bad or indifferent... they have every right to say it without having their opinion squelched, or being admonished for feeling the need to share a negative experience. If nothing else, it gives us opportunity for discussion and to take good hard realistic look at the community we're developing. As great as it is, it can always get better!
Much love to all...
xoxo

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 7:59 PMit would be interesting to have a "Complaint Department" thread for events like this, and ban all negative discussion elsewhere in the tribe. that way, we could consolidate all of those different topics (which could have been all in one single thread) about negativity and allow each problem to be voiced and dealt with without overpowering the positive experiences that many people undoubtedly had. -
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 8:12 PM"ban all negative discussion"
I agree, that would be interesting.
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 6:15 AMWow.... I'm hoping your kidding. You want to BAN discussion that you find negative? Isn't that completely against the entire spirit of PDF. Wouldn't that be like spitting in the face of the event?
It is important to everyone to know that bad things are going on. The only possible way we as a community can do anything to help prevent the thefts and innapropriate behavior is to be aware that they exist.
Blissful ignorance will never end well! -
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 8:10 AMWell, if you read my entire post instead of just the part that jumped out at you ("BAN, "NEGATIVE", "TERRORISM" ;-) ), you'd know that I wasn't trying to eradicate negative discussion about PDF. Rather, I propose concentrating it into a single thread so the topics don't overpower the utilitarian/organization threads or any other discussion that happens in here. I wasn't advocating a tribe-wide ban on it, just trying to segregate it into a single place so people (especially "concerned parents"/politicians) don't read the tribe and get the wrong idea.
Though with all the newcomers that discover this tribe and with the inability to post rules, I guess it would be a little difficult to enforce. =D

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 12:43 PMwe dont need three threads about how bad this PDF was. -
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 5:09 PMFWIW, there are ONLY three threads that dwell on the negative. I count well over 50 where people are expressing love, gratitude, appreciation and oodles of positivity. It seems to me the people who are complaining about the negative discussions are the ones focusing way too much on the negative. If someone doesn't like the tone of a thread, there are plenty of other awesome threads to choose from! Meanwhile, I believe it's not in the spirit of our core principles to discourage open and honest dialogue just because it fogs up someones rose colored glasses. -
-
Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 9:09 PMRight on Dusty.
The one disadvantage of tribe vs. regular message boards, is that we can't set up several forums for different topics.
(I noticed Transformus has a forum just for bitching.. a complaint dept, if you will... good idea)
This is just one big General Discussion forum, and thus all conversation should be encouraged here.
Even the occasional bitch thread.
The only way overcome the negative threads is to stop posting to them, and start positive threads.
(which is why I hadn't posted here before)
But since this discussion is still going on, I figured I'd pipe in...
So I invite everyone to stop posting to this thread, and start or join a different conversation
that's more interesting <G>
(unless you still got something to bitch about ... in that case... "sigh" .. go ahead..)

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 12:33 PMOk well if you can’t beat em join em
My first PDF almost no one saw fit to talk to me,
My second pdf I had to scream at some asshole for peeing in the mud that I was west deep in, some guy asked to borrow my very old and special hat then took it on the trampoline, some one stole 50 dollars from me, some guy insisted that I wrestle him and when I dint he slapped me in the face till I kicked his ass.
My third PDF some old burner freaked on a friend of mine (a tiny cute little thing) because she was looking for her libation of choice, sorry I wasn’t there to deal with that. I walked in to idea dome to find some crotchety old burner named Dust given pour drug raddled first time burner a stern lecture of the 10 principles and informing one in particular that they were a stupid little girl for being there on drugs and not knowing why they were there (talk about rose colored glass).
Well I don’t feel any better I just feel like I dumped on three PDF that were all in all a great time that I wouldn’t trade for the world.
Oh and my third PDF that guy hit me in the face again but this time with a beef jerky and spit covered hand…I threw him around the playa for a half hour. This PDF he did not try again, which is sad, it almost became a tradition. -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Wed, June 10, 2009 - 12:49 PMOh and this spring some dill hole in a monkey outfit poked me with his stick and broke my Freddy claw.
and my first PDF I had to get very serous with some guy that really couldn’t take no for an answer, he just kept asking no matter how many times she said no.
Oh and I get sun burned every spring and the grass hurts my feet but not as much as the rocks.
Drunk people act like assholes and I always give out all my cigarette (a carton every PDF) -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 1:57 AMnot to you specifically, I'm not looking to start a flame war or hate on you and not to rag on your friend, but I'm kinda with Dust. I'm sure he probably went about it the wrong way, but it's kinda a bummer when you start noticing that the majority of inconsiderate acts at pdf are done and somewhat excused becasue people are in an altered state. If you keep running at burning things becasue you're tripping face, maybe you shouldn't be tripping at a burn. If you can't clean up your alcohol containers when drunk then don't get drunk at a place where you should clean up after yourself. if you can't keep your hands to yourself then don't be tripping around a bunch of people who may not be cool with you touching them. and for the love of god I hate seeing people trolling pdf for drugs. "Will massage for drugs" was an actual sign I saw this year, which is not cool, it leaves the gifting economy and enters bartering economy. Drugs shouldn't replace money.
I understand drugs are a way to bring out experiences and creativity and all that jazz, but when they interfere with a person taking care of their own shit or the drugs become the event instead of just an addition to the event, personal re-evaluation needs to happen.
By the by, it is possible to enjoy PDF without drugs. caffeine and sometimes Advil are the only things I use during PDF and I have a blast when I'm not babysitting someone who's TOO fucked up. (I sometimes like babysitting my friends when they have a rosy buzz or light roll) -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 12:23 PMnot going to lie I love drug and I love them at PDF, but I do have to agree with ammre that to many people think of it as a drug festival, this causes me a great deal of anger. I tell people all the time that many people stay sober at PDF and if your just here to find drugs go to Rainbow or boneru.
A quick question I know that gifting is the ideal but I thought bartering was encouraged as the alternative to money.
I may very well be wrong. -

Re: Bad Experiences @ PDF.
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 2:16 PMI totally agree on this. My only real 'downer' was what seemed like the Sunday Night Drug Troll.
Have fun, do what you want to do, but if you rely on finding some substance to have a good time, you're in the wrong place.
And for shame anyone selling said substances on the Playa, go back and read the 10 Commandments of Burning Man!
OK, I have one other bad experience - I didn't get contact information from multiple people that I really should have! What was I thinking!?
