CALLING ALL WRITERS!!!!

A couple of recent conversations on the declining popularity of the printed word brought me to an inevitable wondering: Why isn't there a PDF newspaper yet? I mean, we have the What, Where, and When? for their respective PDFs, but wouldn't it be freaking AWESOME to receive a 'Zine in the mail in, say...early February and early August, reviewing the awesomeness of THEIR respective previous PDFs, first hand, from those who had lived it. No, WE who have lived it!
My roommate Rachel actually works as a web-designer for the lady who owns and runs a classified-ad magazine in the capital region of New York. Right there, we already have a solid connection to get what's written printed. I was thinking about personally picking up some composition notebooks, a butt-load of pens, and handing them out to anyone interested in being a writer for the PDF Newspaper...'course we'll also have to come up with a better name for it. But at the end, I'm gonna wanna collect the notebooks and compiling the paper through consensus, the fairest way I know. Or mebbe.......why don't you guys out there tell me what y'all think about this idea before I let it get away from me!

The capital or the capitol of NY.. the place with the star over it on most maps is Albany. The money center - and place many think of as the capitol of the world, at least based on capital, would be NYC.

My experience is that an actual written paper is so last century. I too have worked with people who have started up their own newspapers, and it's expensive! Back when I was in the capitol of the cofederacy (Richmond VA) I remember this guy who was putting out a local zine type community paper was paying about $800 per page, and was sweating to get advertisers to help subsidies this.

If I might make a suggestion to your roomate Rachel, I would say put all the good stuff up on a website (did that my first burn, www.mindspring.com/~foxc1/burn/ ) but she should be much classier and updated than what I did, obviously, and then social network the hell out of it.

Don't forget, official NV desert Burningman has the "Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks" bman-announce@burningman.com
They save trees by e-blogs. I get all my news of events online . I go into the city and pick up a paper and it tells me all kinds of stuff I'd never otherwise know, but all of that is online too. So I have more paper to throw away.

I guess what I'm saying is that you might not want to go to the trouble of making a print-copy of your idea, but put it on the internet, and express/grow the topic there. I also work in print media, graphic design, web design, and desktop publishing. I am tired of mass print media, because if something is of interest, I print it here at home, if I think it needs printing in the first place (usually not).

YES! I agree it would be good to have a 'Zine of some form, and maybe it could be a set of pages on Playadelfuego.org (They use the Joomla CMS website model, it's easy to add pages and let authorized people interactively edit pages). A good writer, who can wrangle all the stories from the live source of our PlayDelFuego tribe link and who has been there firsthand would indeed be awesome!nm I would read it!

These are all great ideas, but having a publication that you can hand out while on playa has its on benefits. Online publications relating to burns tend to stick to promotion and planning. Having an "on-playa" paper provides "live" coverage of events as they unfold, much the way a tradition newspaper did, when people actually read stuff. For instance, say you want to announce a performance or art placement, but did not make the submission deadline for the WWW...BAM! write a blurb and submit it to the editor. Or, say a particularly reknowned artist or performer is making an appearance, but did not want to announce their presence before-hand, spoiling the surprise. Put it in the paper.

In homage to it's black rock patriarch, the "PDF Beacon" would be the perfect title for such a publication. If they can manage distrubution and moop issues at the scale of a 50,000 strong city, certainly taking it to a smaller level would be a cinch. One of their tenets is encouraging multiple people to read the same copy, i.e. distributing one copy to each theme camp. And hey, guess what, paper burns!

I think this is an awesome idea. I THINK there was a e-newsletter going on with PDF already, called the Burning Pony Express. I agree with Leland's idea however, probably best to have it in an internet/web-based format to save the trees. :)

However, if it gets going, I'd love to be able to help with the writing of it! I actually was thinking of writing a little "fanfic" with a PDF theme. But I can write anything. ;)

    Keep me posted!

Do some research into the black rock beacon...you would be doing yourself a favor by following their model. Apparently, the excessive indulgence and utilization of bacon and related pork products is pivotal to their success (get it, BeACON?). They have their own tribe, check it out.

Good luck in your endeavor...I would be happy to contribute a column and to help distribute the periodical upon its publication. I can also help with your editing and layout...I have a few friends in the graphic design field that would certainly love to help spruce things up a bit once we have some material.

    Keep me in the loop!
    • WWW versus WWW & the BPE!

      Thu, October 15, 2009 - 10:19 AM
I think enhancing the existing Burning Pony Express with these writers you call upon is a good idea. More centralization...AND more CONTENT! News of PDF's past, editorials of PDF's Ways & Means, write-ups of PDF Meetings' Past Minutes and Future Agendas. It could also contain some fiction writing and poetry related to the PDF Experience, as well as Mid-Atlantic participants in BRC and Burners without Borders, etc.

As for the actual printed page, I feel all efforts should go into helping make the What, Where, When the most accurate and up-to-date 'Program' possible, because once we're 'On The Playa' it is (thankfully) hard to get online. So the printed WWW replaces the electronic WWW. IMHO, very appropriate for its purpose.

Actually Jerry did try to put together an event paper this fall, but his printers
    were just not cooperating.

The mailing lists are all here (including the BPE):

Obviously, he was not using enough bacon. Your printers are jamming? Bam, bacon grease. Problem solved. I am not sure of the exact diet that the staff of the Black Rock Beacon adheres to, but if this fall is any indicator, it is best to err on the side of caution. There is no such thing as too much bacon, you know? Also, it might be good to have certain objects dedicated solely to the preparation and consumption of bacon, such as a bacon skillet (eggs are the only exception and may be cooked in the bacon skillet to absorb any leftover bacon residue), bacon fork, bacon plate, bacon bibb, etc. It's good to have an embodied ritual surrounding the whole process.

On a related note, I am chewing on an idea for the spring: bacon cook-off. The culinary applications of bacon are endless. Call me superstitious, but running an article on the bacon cook-off in the first issue of the PDF beacon cannot be a bad thing. I will try to keep it to six inches.

Has anyone ever had a wilted spinach salad with chicken livers, bacon vinaigrette, pickled red onions and lardons (that's jullienne strips of bacon, in case you were wondering)? Wholly shit...all I can say is brace yourself!

Some more ideas for the paper:

An everything bacon issue; bacon: it's not just for eating anymore (or IS it...) How to include bacon in your diet in a society decreasingly tolerant of daily bacon consumption. Cooking and eating bacon outside of the box...while it may be great to dip in your egg yolks, you are missing the full potential bacon has to offer. The French are known for their use of butter, but they are also the lovers of the swine and its belly fat (Feel free to poke fun at this statement). Americans prefer slices, but the French rock the lardon. Italian cuisine and bacon: an even saltier pork product. Why pancetta and vodka sauce are a match made in heaven. Is there such a thing as too much bacon? Answer: NO! Stay off the lawn!

And don't forget, you're doin it WRONG!!!

    Soi, soi, soi....
    My roflcopter has taken off.
I'm so happy to see so many people biting onto this idea, bacon and all. I fully endorse it. I'll get to seriously organizing some idears this week. Thanks so freaking much for all th input so far. Keep it coming!!!!

I am glad I tickled your funny bone:) Matt definately helped me along in the process. However, I think I am going to start my own paper entirely devoted to bacon. Best of luck with your project.

Just kidding, I am looking forward to working together. We can brainstorm and wisecrack on this forum, but we should probably touch base on a more serious level as the spring draws nearer, say in march, so we can work on layout for our first edition. In the meantime we can work on articles and topic ideas. When the WWW is posted, we could do a daily article on our perceived highlights. For instance, anything involving bacon or nudity. Then, once we are on the playa, we will have the Thursday edition basically in the bag and ready to hand out, and the rest of the editions outlined, with space penciled in for coverage of events like major parties, performances, interviews, art placements, etc. We will also keep our ears to the ground for events not listed in the WWW, so we can keep everyone informed, in case there weren't already enough distractions on the playa.

As far as circulation, I am thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-100 copies. We will pass them out to theme camps, keep some at the participation station, and at the greeter's gate until Saturday. We don't want to kill a bunch of tree or create a moop situation, and with circulation in those numbers, you can anticipate 10-20 people reading each copy, which is reasonable. Maybe we could also include games that encourage the participation of multiple people.

Would you be interested in covering other burner-themed events, like PEX parties and open spin jams? Usually most of the chatter surrounding those types of events focuses on promotion and planning, as I mentioned previously, but it would be cool to have coverage of the events after they are in the history books (because we will put them there, bitches!). That service would probably be more useful in an online capacity, or possibly a monthly or quarterly newsletter. But for real, we need to make a daily hard-copy newspaper to hand out at PDF. It really makes me sad that all of the newspapers are going out of business. Won't it be funny if the only newspapers are free and created by burners?

God, we are a bunch of lunatics...

I wouldn't have it any other way......

I'll be seeing about bringing a laserjet printer to PDF in the spring, as well, but powering the thing may cause some problems. We'll need lotsa watts. I love the daily hard-copy idea, too. AWESOMEAWESOMEAWESOME. As for covering Burner Events and Spin Jams outside of PDF - YES. Phuck yes. There's a weekly Spin Jam here in Albany that I go to. Mad familiar faces there. Easy to cover. Also, any concerts or shows that people might wanna throw an article together for, I'm down to read. I think anyone who has a DJ in their camp might wanna interview them, theme camp runners, too. It'd be cool to more thoroughly familiarize ourselves with one another that way, I think. We could have DJ bios, or something like that. Each issue showcases another DJ, or another Them Camp, or something. I think we have enough people organized already to cover just about everything on the playa.
I'm looking forward to seeing some more ideas!

I'm a reporter. Three years experience. And a photographer. I'm not such a reliable worker at PDF, but I could be, if you asked, in advance.

I would love to write for a paper...or newsletter... of any kind for PDF. YaY! It would be refreshing to write about something I like for once... WEEE! LOVE YOU PDF!!

Please let me know. Send me a message for digits or email.
  • Holy Shit!

I'm freaking stunned with the enormity of responses from all of you out there. My roommates and I are so stoked to have an idea like this flowing. Jonah, I think 50-100 copies is a great idea. Theme camps included, I don't think there ARE any more than 100 camps, so distributions won't be all that hard and whatnot. I love the fake Ads idea as well. We should get Daft Punk in on it, for sure.
As for anyone who posted on here, interested in writing/submitting:
Yes yes yes! The more, the better. Staying with radical inclusion, I figure anyone at all who shows any interest in the least in this project should def.def. be involved. I don't check my email, but if you leave me a message here on Tribe, I'll be sure to see it in a timely fashion.
First and foremost, start as close to home as you can. Gather info from campmates of your own regarding the earliest plans people have for next PDF. The sooner we start, the more material we'll have to work with. Also, I'd like to see what kind of coverage this past PDF got. If anyone would like to get this ball rolling by acknowledging events they'd attended @ Fall '09 PDF, I am all ears - or eyes, as it were. Article format would be appreciated, but what do I care? This is Burner-Art. I really don't think unconventional methods of sharing one's experiences on paper will be shunned, especially by me. If anyone still has their WWW, that's a good place to start refreshing our memories. Start there, I think, then go on to as much of PDF as wasn't covered in the WWW as we can. Come mid-Winter, I'm right certain we'll have more than enough to see this project through.
I am so diggin this shit.
